AFRICAN TROUBLES.
London, January 10. The friction between England and Portugal respecting the claim of the latter to Nyassolaud is becoming more acute. The Standard says Lord Salisbury must vigorously resent Portugal’s claims to control the mouths of the Zambesi. In reply to a deputation on the subject, Lord Knutsford disclaimed any intention on the part of the Government to band over Beolmanaland to Cape Colony. January 11, News has been received that during the revolutions in Uganda, English and French mission stations, with all their stores, and amongst other things, letters for Stanley and Emin Bey were destroyed, The ex-King Mwang# is imprisoned by the Arabs, who threaten to exterminate all missions in Central Africa in revenge for the anti-slave policy of the English. The English missionaries in Uganda are at present safe. January 12. Information has been received that the Christian natives at Uganda have murdered one of the teachers connected with the mission, and expelled Mr Knapp, who was appointed German Consul after approval of his conduct in Samoa, Zanzibar, January 9. A letter, believed to be written by Stanley, has arrived hero addressed to the King of the Belgians.
