S.C. CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was held on Friday. Present— Messrs D. M. Ross (Chairman), McLaren, Moore, Barker, and Dr Lovegrove. Apologies were received from Mr Jackson and others* Accounts amounting to £S3B 11s 2d were passed for payment on hospital and Charitable aid accounts. The sub-committee had held a meeting on 31st December, and recommended that the following tenders be accepted for supply of charitable aid rations limoru, J. Shepherd ; Waimate, Manchester Bros ; Temufea, A, R. Allan; Fairlie Creek. J. Call f Gera ! dine, R. H. Pearpoint; Timam (for cool), E. Smith. The recommendations were approved of. Dr Ewart wrote resigning bis Dost as resident surgeon, and giving the’ board the usual two months notice After some discussion, on the motion of Mr McLaren, it was resolved that the chairman interview Dr Ewart, and ask him to reconsider his resignation, failing consent the chairman to advertise for a successor, duties and salary as at present. The town clerk of Waimate wrote informing the board that Mr F. Slee hid been elected to represent the above council on the board. The case of the alleged wrongful treatment of a patient (in Dr Drew's time) came up again, and in order to have the whole subject fully ventilated, Mr McLaren said he was of opinion the late patient should be summoned for the amounts owing by him. It was resolved that two others should also be procseded against fc.r amounts owing by them. The usual statement shot ved that the bank overdraft was £872 2a -4d. The chairman was empowered to notify those bodies in arrears with payment that the amounts must be sent in at once. The House Steward (Mr Thomas Jowsey) submitted his report for the year. It 'showed that the number of in patients treated had been—29 married men and 127 single men ;31 married women and 44single women ; grand tola 1 231 p t'ents. The daily average bad been 27, and the daily cost 5s 4d per head. The outpatients treated had been 221 males and 284 females. Seventy-three patients had pMd all or part of their maintenance, amounting to £251 2s lid. Donations amounting to £4 3s Id, and dividend from the Russell fund of £3O 3s Bd, had been received. Sixteen males and four females had died during the year, and 30 accident cases had been admitted. £747 7s 2d had been spent on s&Lries, and the total expenditure for: the year, os per statement of working expenses, was £2519 6s 9d. Charitable aid cases were then dealt with, and the meeting terminated.
