SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST AN ENGLISH ATTACHE.
Berlin, January 7. The Geffken inquiry confirmed old reports that Sir R. Morier betrayed to Marshal Bazaine secrets divulged by Prince Frederick. Bismarck is unfriendly to Sir R. Morier, and inspired the Cologne Gazette in order to justify the report that the diary of the late Emperor was untrustworthy. Hence Sir R. Morier’s appeal, and Count Herbert Bismarck’s snub. The relations between the English and German Foreign Offices have been strained by the incident, January 9. The Dowager Empress Augusta has requested Prince Bismarck to give denial to the statement that Herr Councillor Brandis trevoaled the contents of the secret war despatches to Sir R. Morier during the Pranco-Prussian war. The official press insinuate that it is desirable that the Empress Victoria should make a similar dental to that of the Dowager Empress Augusta regarding the Morier incident. The National Zeitung deprecates the Morier incident being allowed to cause friction between England and Germany. Diplomatic negotiations are still proceeding.
