GERALDINE LITERARY INSTITUTE
The annual general meeting of the members of the above Institute was held in the library on Thursday evening last. There was a fair attendance. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and confirmed, REPORT AND BALANCE SUBBT. The secretary’s annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted.' The latter showed the Committee to be about £ls in debt. REDUCTION OP SUBSCRIPTION. A.discussion took place with regard to reducing the annual subscription, Mr W. M. Moore expressing the conviction that a reduction to 10s would result in a great many more subscribers being obtained, especially if a strong individual canvass of the district were made. He noticed that most of the surrounding libraries were reducing their subscription, and he believed that a lowering of the subscription and a strong canvass for members would result satisfactorily. Mr Vabater thought the Committee should endeavor to get some of the latest books in order to make the rooms more attractive. Members were of the same opinion, and it was decided to suggest a canvass to the incoming Committee, and that should the same prove satisfactory some of the latest and most popular books should be obtained. ' It was also decided to recommend the new Committee that a sub-Comraittee be formed to select some of the old books it was advisable t® sell with a view to obtaining a new stock of books. ELECTION OP OFFICERS. The election of officers then took place, and resulted as follows Patron, Rev. G. Barclay; President, Rev. J. Preston; VicePresident, Dr R. Fish/ Treasurer, reelected ; Secretary, H. N. Hiskens; Committee, Messrs A. White, J. A. Fitzgerald, D. Macdonald, A. H, Brisco, A. E. Hawkins, H. B. Webster, J. Mundell, H. W. Moore, F. Wilson Smith, and W. M. Moore. New Committee Mbbtin». A meeting of the new Committee was then held, when the folowing resolution was carried on the proposition of Mr W. M. Moore, seconded by Mr Webster—- “ That the Committee be requested to make a personal canvass of the district, with a view of finding out how many new members can be obtained at a reduced subscription of 10a per annum, and also for the purpose of making the Institute batter known and appreciated, the Committee to report at a meeting to be held on Feb. 12th next.” A catalogue of the books in the library was supplied to each of the committee for the purpose of the canvass. It war also decided to forward a cattbgue to each school committee in the district with a request to have it circulated among the parents of the children, with the information that the committee propose to reduce the subscription to IQs per annum, should sufficient support be forthcoming. ' ENTERTAINMENT. Messrs Hawkins and fl. Moore were appointed a sub-committee to arrange for some description of entertainment with a view to raising funds, BOOKS. Messrs H, W. and W. M. Moore, Hawkins, Brisco, and the Treasurer were appointed a Committee to pick out a number of books for sale with a view to obtaining new ones. A vote of thanks to the retiring officers, and also to the chair terminated the meeting.
