London,. January 1. Mr J. Sheehan, an Irish M.P., has been convicted of conspiracy, and sentence suspended owing to ill-health, January 2, Mr Finncane, M.P. for Limerick East, has been sentenced to four months’ imprisonment for conspiracy. Notice of appeal was given. January 8. A desperate resistance was offered to the evictions on-PgsherPs estate, Donegal, Two hundred police and soldier* were engaged, and the latter were about to fire when a priest persuaded the people to surrender. Mr Gladstone, in an article in the Nineteenth Century, says O’Connell was the greatest popular leader of the century, and the greatest Irishman who lived. He was superior to such national leaders as Kossilth, Mazzini, and Cavour. English hatred to Ireland was inherited, and was indicative of the feelings of wrongdoers to the wronged nation. THE EUROPEAN SITUATION. . Rome, January 1. President Carnot, speaking at his official reception yesterday, by implication gave his hearers to understand that peace must be maintained during the exhibition year. Belgrade, January 1. Four Radical deputies have been arrested on a charge of conspiracy against King Milan. January 2. King Milan insists on the new Servian constitution being adopted in its entirety, otherwise he threatens to dissolve the Skupstina and rule himself. January 3, The Skupstina has adopted the new constitution by a majority of 429. Berlin, January 3. The German authorities have increased the stringency of the passport regulations for Frenchmen visiting Alsace and Lorraine.
