The removal of soil had necessitated the hire of a horsa for days. When the work of cleaning the Fire Brigade wells commenced it would be necessary to engage a second baud. Nothing had yet been done in the matter of the bricking of the wells, pending replies re cost, etc., cf iron manholes. Ho asked instructions as to which of the two applicants he was to engage as second man. The contractors for the asphalting had made use of all available time, and had material mijod for the footpaths on the east side of the Main street, the inner kerbing of v which had been laid that day. The Clerk r fc£ Works had been engaged 7 days 2 hours ‘WTthis work. Owners of property having torse posts irregularly placed on the footpaths had been notified to remove same, but had not yot done so. He requested authority to have same done by the Board at owner’s cost. Ho also asked for instructions as to the disposal of the soil removed from footpaths by the asphalt contractors. Relative to crossings for heavy traffic, as at Messrs Winning’s and Henry’s, the contractor was of opinion that the asphalting could -be made sufficiently strong to take any ordinary weight. The Overseer suggested that all owners having low premises on the east of Main street should have pipes laid under the footpaths, and further that the kerbing in Railway Terrace should be backed up by having the balance of the road metalled.. As Inspector of Nuisances the Clerk reported that the drain on the east side of Vine street required attention, and ho recommended that overhanging gorse and broom fences, trees, etc., should be removed. The branch drains also required cleaning. He also reported that ho had received verbal complaints of tho irregularity of the night-soil contractor. INSTRUCTIONS. Tho,Clerk was instructed to notify to owners of property abutting on Vine street that the fences must be cut and the i / branch drains cleaned. Failing their y prompt compliance the work to be done at owners cost. Re the report it was resolved to have two wells cleaned out and bricked, as suggested by the Fire Brigade. Mr J. Davis to be employed as second hand. On the suggestron of Mr Coira it was agreed to have the soil taken from the paths to be asphalted removed to Railway and placed as a support to the kerbing. It was resolved that the asphalting be continued over crossings and made proportionately stronger. SANITARY. The Chairman said that it had been suggested that some steps should be taken to re-arrange the night soil contract with the view of having the contractor more under control. A rate could be struck to cover any sanitary expense. It was agreed to consider the matter further at next meeting, the Chairman in the meantime to ascertain from the Board’s solicitor the legality of striking a special sanitary rate. ACCOUNTS.
