TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

meeting of the Temuka Road Board was held on Tuesday last Present—Messrs J. Talbot (chairman), J. Fraser, C. Bisset, and M. Quinn. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting ; were read, and confirmed, accounts., Accounts to the amount of £73 19s 9d were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows;—! From the Geraldine County Council, requesting the payment of £lO9 9a 9D, amount of second instalment due to ithe Charitable Aid Board for iho period ending Mtiroli 31,1889.—Passed for payment. From Mr John W. White, solicitor. Timaru, stating that be had been consulted by Mr Win, Hawke re damage done to his land daring the past four years, in consequence - of cuttings improperly made by the board in the road running by bis land, section No. 26,697, north bank Orari River, which he es'imated at £SO, and had been instructed to commence legal proceedings to recover the same. Mr Hawke had also instructed him to state that ucl ss immediate steps were taken to permanently prevent any further damage to his land such other proceedings wonldbe taken for his own protection as he might think fit: A short discussion ensued. Mr Quinn said he thought Ihe malter mightbe easily s ittled if the members were to meet Mr Hawke at the place. Mr Hawke had been at the office on (be previous board duy to interview the board, but- the meeting lapsed. He had told him, however, that he did not wish to put the board to any expense. —lt was agreed that a committee of the board should meet Mr Hawke at the river on Tuesday, the 18'h instant, at 9 a.m., the chairman, Mr Fraser, and Mr Quinn to be the Committee, the other member* to be invited to be present. The overseer is also to attend. From Mr Wm. Page, Winchester, offering £1 per year for the shingle reserve between the Waihi River and the ‘creek ion the Geraldine Road.—Not entertained. ! From MrR, Taylor, Geraldine, stating that the improvements promised on the road leading to the swamp bad not yet beerrperformed, although at tbe time of the previous application be had slated that persons interested were willing to pay their share of the estimated coat,— The ove/seer had reported on the matter in August last, and it was decided to carry pul bis suggestion—namely, to form 53 chains—provided the applicants pay half tbe coat. From Mr Thos. McKay, requesting the board to close tbe road at the north ead of sections 26,012, etc., at the Rangitata Island, as it was .not used for traffic or required,—lt was decided that the surveyor should inspect the place on hie next visit to the place and report. From Mr B. K. M«cdonald, informing the hoard that the trustees of the Orari estate and Mr Angus Macdonald were willing to agree to the terms re gates on public roads as specified in the board’letter. —It was decided that (he board should get the necessary , guarantee, prepared at tbe expense of the applicants. Fresh tenders have also been invited for Contract No. 32, as 'the previous contractor for this work has declined to go on with it.—The work let at lust meeting is being proceeded with, and will shortly be completed. —The culvert on the road from Newlands to Rolleston’i, authorised at last, meeting, has been put in.—The crossing at the junction of Christmas’s road and White’4 road has not been done, as 1 find that owing to the loose and sandy nature of the ground it is hot practicable to put in such l a crossing as was suggested by the applicants and authorised to be dons. What is required is a concrete culvert.—The shingling applied for by Mr Guild has been done, and also some shingle repairs bh the Main South Road.—Timber for deoking is required, there being only 4,000 feet in stock.—As directed, I have seen Mr Bad bam in reference to diverting the road through his properly j he is not willing to sell land for this purpose. I would* recommend that if tbr Board cannot see their way to erect 3 new bridge the present one be repaired in the. manner described in last month’s report,— The Boiling-down road has been on fire, and is considerably burned in some places.—This was caused by (De spreading from Education Reserve N 0.1211. The burntj, places in this road require; to be filled with clay.—Winchester Bridge : The decking of thD bridge is now too far gone fcr ordinary.repairs to be of much service. —l have, etc., “F. Christmas’s and White’s Roads—After discussing the matter it was decided that a box-culvert should be put in. , Ro.fire on-BoHing-down road, it was; decided that the Overseer should inform Mr Warsiag that the Board will claim from him him cost of repairs. to road damaged by fire spreading from his land. Trumper, £l7 10s j F. Malarkey, £l4 (accopted). No. 36—Formation and earthwork, Ton- rV Road ; F. Malarkey, £2l 12a; B. Trump’r, £l9 17« fid; Davis and Melvin, £l9 h (accepted). OUTSTANDING RATES. . The overseer was instructed to take immediate steps to collect outstanding rates, and other, accounts owing. DATE 01 MEETING. Next ord naiy meeting day falling on New Year's Day, it was. decided, on the motion of Mr Quinn, that the next ordinary meeting should be held on the 8 h January. The meeting then terminated.
