Timaru—December 11,1888. (Before Hie Honor Judge Ward). The criminal session of tha Supreme Court was opened on Tuesday morning before His Honor Mr Justice Ward, The Grand Jury found a true bill in ovary oisa with tha exception of the charge against I. Battison of making a false declaration under the Marriage Act. HOUSEBREAKING AND LARCENY. Walter Fraser, a lad of 16, charged with breaking into the house of Michael Lynch, Makikihi, on May 22nd, and stealing therefrom £3 in monsy, pleaded guilty.—The Probation Officer’s report was very unfavorable, —Mr Tichener, of the Oarersbam Industrial School, applied that Fraser might be recommitted to the school until he was 21 years of age.—His Honor said he oould only commit a boy to an industrial school until he became 16 years of age, and sentenced accused to 12 months' impriionment with hard labor, Mr Tichener undertaking to apply to the Minister of Justice at once for his transfer to the school. lOBGEHY AND UXTBBINO. Henry Dickson Adams pleaded guilty to two indictments charging him with forging and ottering two cheques, respectively, for £4 13s and A 6 9s, in Timaru, on August 25. —The accused pleaded that he did it because he could not obtain employment, and his wife and child were in want. Ha’OommiLUu the forgeries within ten minutes of each other.— His Honor said the evidence did not bearcat the accused’s statement, and he must have contemplated the forgeries for several days. A sentence of 9 months’ imprisonment for oaoh offence (18 months ia all), was imposed. HOUSEBREAKING AND LABOBNT. Henry Hunt and John Atwill, two boys of about 14J years of age, pleaded guilty to breaking into the dwelling-house of Archibald Sharer at Waimate on Sept. 20th, and stealing therefrom sundry articlss.-*His Honor ordered Atwill to be released on probation, to report himself periodically and be under police surveillance for two years; his father to pay the costs of the prosecution, £5. Hunt, who. had been convicted of larceny summarily twice before, was committed to the industrial school at Burnham until he is 15 years of age. IABOBNY OB WOOL. James Walls, charged with stealing on the Ist November four biga and 2431 b wool, tha property of the N X. and A. L. 00., Fareora, and on a second oharge with receiving the same, knowing it to have been stolen, pleaded not guilty.—After hearing the evidence, the jury returned a verdict of guilty, and prisoner then admitted having been convicted on 4th January, 1887, of stealing grass seed. —His Honor sentenced the prisoner to two , years’ hard labor. This concluded the criminal business, and the Court rose.

INVERCARGILL. December 12. John Maloney was sentenced to ten years’ for shooting at Dr Galbraith. He pleaded guilty to shooting with intent to do grievous bodily ham. The evidence indicated that prisoner had an antipathy against the medical profession through a belief that he had been injured by an operation. The Judge, in passing sentence, said he must assume the prisoner’s sanity, but ho would call the attention of the Executive Government to the casein order that investigation might be made as to the sanity or otherwise of the accused, Alexander McKenzie is now under trial for arson of a store at Pakerau. John MoPhaill who had been arrested, but not indicted, is one of the witnesses. McKenzie’s late partners swore that he proposed burning the store in order to secure the insurance, and when the objection was made he said that better men than they were bad done so. Radka walked into the Supreme Court; this morning. He smiled at the police officers present, and soon after left for the gaol with the sergeant and gaoler,
