GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday last. Present Messrs W. U. Slack, F. R. Flat roan, and P. McShane. Mr W. Postlethwaife forwarded an apology for non-attendance, and in his absence Mr Slack was voted to the chair. MINUTES.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. SMALL BIRDS' NUISANCE.

Mr Flatman brought op the subject; of the Bmall birds nuisaoce. He thought it was a great pity that decided steps had not beeo taken by the various boards for ths extermination of the birds. He was in favor of a bill being introduced into Parliament to deal with the matter. A conversational discussion took place, but no action was taken. TENDERS. Tenders ware opened and dealt with as follows : Contract 274—Building store and shed in the board's yard, Geraldine—J. D. Clouston, £26 (accepted); Arthur Beat, £2B. Contract 275—Grubbing and clearing flax from Rao's creek, Raukapuka Flat—0. Waller and Co., £2O; Wm. Best, £l6 15a ; Jas. Beckley, £l4 ; P. Le<uy, £l2 12s lOd ; A. Kennedy, £l2; Wm. Weaver, £ll 17s sd; Gaiger and Co., £8 19s ; E. Rae, £8 (accepted). The clerk stated that since last meeting the chairman of the board had acoepted the tender of P. Billings (£47) for driving iron piles in the Orari riverbed; also James Beckley b tender for stop-bank at Captain Temple's (£3 10s). CORRESPONDENCE.

Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : Mr Alexander Maxwe'l, Opihi, asked the board to form some 60 chains of the road near hie property.—The board declined to do the work, as applicant had two other roads to his property. From Mr J. D. Jones, referring to the board spending money io repairing the embankment on the south side of the \Waihi river, the same being on private property, and such work being contrary to a resolution passed by the board in December, 1887'.—The board took time to consider the matter, Mr E'atman being , strongly of opinion that the board ought ' to have power given them to protect their roads in riverbeds.—The olerk was instructed to write to the county council to enquire what action the council bad taken to place the riverbeds under the board's control.—Mr Flatman gave notice of motion as follows :—" That I intend at tbe next meeting of this board to move that the resolution passed at the last Hitting of the board granting Mr Lewis 30a for repairs to certain protective works be rescinded." From Mr A. W. Ensor, Winchester, regarding the water-race he proposed making, stating tbe course it would take, and asking permission to cut the race alongside tbe road, on the unformed portion of the road, and agreeing to repair any damige that might be caused to the road by the race.—The board declined to take any responsibility in the matter. From Mr A. McEenzie, pointing out that the stop banks just created on the Winchester road wool! turn the water on to his paddock instead of into its natural water course, which ran a few yards lower down.—Tho overseer was instructed to meet Mr McKenjaie with regard to the matter. From the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board requesting tbe payment of £79 3s dd, second instalment of the board's contribution for the year ending March 3lst, 1889.—Passed. The Temtika Road Board wrote with reference to the proposed protective works on the boundary road. Tbe board would prefer that the road be diverted through Education reserve No. 1210 as originally proposed, and suggested the advisibility of recommending the Ministry to insert a clause in the Public Works Act Amendment Act 1889 (that is proposed to be introduced into Parliament at its next Hessioo, and a copy of which kas been) forwarded to local bodies for their (ap-1

proval), giving school commissioners power to aelt land vested in them, if ' required for public purposes. If, In the event of the present road being washed : awsy, Mr J. Kelland would allow traffic to go through the reserve referred to, the Temaka Board considered it would be preferable to allow the matter to remain *s it ie until a title to the land could be obtained.—lt was decided that the chairmen ef the two boards should meet and discuss the matter, and if necessary the chairman of lln Cra.ine Board call a special meeting of the board.

Mr MoShane drew the attention of the bo.ird to the fact that the sluice put down by Mr Deßenziefor hie water race backed u p the water, and it was deoided to give bin notice to remove the same; at the same time to inform him the sluice could be used when the water was required for chatf-cutting. otoksbir'i BJsFOKT. The Overseer's report was read as follows: " To the Chairman. " Sib,— I have the honor to report for the information of the Board as under r—The various oontraote in hand have made good progress during the past month. The undermentioned have been completed since last meeting of the Beard t Groynes at Taller Bridge, 7. Dierok; shingle, Hawkes' road, M. Lawlor; channels aid groynes, Valley river, J. Beokley; formation and shingle, Orari, M. Lawlor; repairs, Woodbury crossing, R. O'Neill; stop bank, near Captain Temple's J. Beokley $ rook protection, Yalley point, B. O'Neill; eenerete culvert and fords, Geraldine road, A. Kennedy. R. O'Neill and A. Kennedy have done the work ana very satisfactory manner.—Aboat half the number of iron piles at the protective works above the Orari Bridge have been driven. Owing to the hard nature ef the shingle-bed the driving is very tedious work. The ground is maoh harder than ,we ezpeeted, and it is difficult to get the piles down' the required depth.—lron rails: Den tons of rails have arrived at the Orari for the works at the Belfleld settlement, and are now ready to be carted to the flat. In oenneetien with this I have had a light frame made for the piledriver, so as to be more easily moved about from plaoe to plaoe. I would suggest that a few more rails be obtained and driven dawn to seoure the willows already put in at the Yalley point and Peekham's crossing.— Rates t I have received on general rate account during the month £l9B ts 9d, making a total of £646 3s 3i rates collected to date.— Horses: As the roads are sow in very good order I would suggest that one ef the Beard's i horses be sold, as two are net required at 1 psesent. i "W.Snni, " Clerk and Overseer." It was decided to call the attention of the Belfield settlers to cart the rails from the Orari. It was decided to make application for ;10 tons mora of iron rails, and to Nil one of the Board's horses. UJfERTIBWS. Mr A. W. Ensor waited oh the Board with regard to hie application mentioned ! above, and stated that the parties in* torested had no objection to tha race being made.—Mr Eosor was informed that he had better get the consent of the parties interested in the work. The board would than piece no objection in | tha way, but would take no responsibility i whatever in the matter. J Mr Macdonald, Pleasant Yalley, waited on the board with regard to the encroaeb* ment of the river near Captain Temple's, «bjectiog to the protection works that had been erected, as the same were causing the river to injure hie property. He asked the members of the board to visit the spot, when he felt sure they would ciuse the works to be removed.—lt w'as decided that Messrs Slack and Flatman should visit the spot and report at the .sect meeting of the board, v Mr A. McKsniie waited on; : the board in support of hie objection to the stopbaoks ereoted on Winchester road,—-He was informed that the defect pointed out by him woald be remedied. 1000VNTS. Accounts amounting to JR435 10s 9d were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
