A long discussion took place on Mr Talbotfs notified motion—'"That in future in computing tbe salary of the head teacher of the Timarn school tbe attendance both at tbe main and aide schools be calculated.”—Mr Barclay objected very strongly to the proposal, as it was not id accordance with the regulations, and eventually it was agreed to let the matter stand over, Mr Barclay tabling a notice of motion—“ That by next Board day any information from anyone interested bearing on the election of the headmaster to the Timaru main and side schools be submitted by the secretary, and if necessary any desirable relations for the future bo defined."

Six tenders were received for erecting class-room at South Orari, and that of F. Langdon at £9412s 4d was accepted. Tbe Inspectors reports on tbe standard examinations of a number of schools were received. The following are the percentage of passes: Temuka, percentage of passes 43, failures 14; Winchester, puses 41, failures 30; Waitobi Flat, passes 45, failures 17 ; Albury, passes 29, failures 40 (exceptional circumstances); Orari South, passes 60, failures 5; Otaio (Upper), passes 4s, failureso (Mr Ritchie, teacher); Milford, passes 33, failures 40; Hook, passes 20, failures 65 (report unfavorable); Timaru Main School, passes 52, failures 9 ; Timaru Side School, passes 45, failures 11. The following report, giving the comparative cost of schools in Sooth Canterbury, compiled from official documents, was laid on the table by the Rev. Mr Smyth :—“For the B| irch quarter, which shows more accmifily the real position, the numbers were—7 large schools, 2207, 315*28; 11 aided schools, 197, 17*96; 32 small schools, 1276, 39.87. Average cost per head—For the 7 large schools, £3 Js; do 1] aided schools, £4 19s; do 32 small schools, £4 15a 3d. Tbe above* was the actual cost for last year to the Board. The aided schools cost the resi* dents 13s lid per head, making the total cost of a child educated at an aided school £5 12s lid. The above is exclusive of maintenance and repairs. The cost p;«r head of each school for the year on.ufng 1887 was as followsßelfiefd, £5 2s 8d; Fairviow, £5 6a 3d ; Fairlie Creek, £4 3s 7d ; Gapes’ Valley, £5 Qa 9d ; Geraldine, £3 7e 2d ; Geraldine Flat, £6 5s 6d Hook, £5 18s; Hilton, £3 13s id;: Kakahu Bush, £5 7a 7d ; Kingsdown, £4 9s 8d ; Makikihi, £5 4s 6d ,• Milford£4 7s 7d ; Orari Bridge, £5 7s 2d ; Orari* South, £6 12« ;■ Pareora, £4 6* 8d ;; Pleasant Point, £3 7s; Pleasant Valley,, £3 Is 3d ; Rangitata Island, £4 Hj s ;; Raugitata South, £5 15s 3d; xtangitiray Valley, £5 4s; St. Andrews, £4 19 ft . Remarks Generally all schools under 60 are a lots to the Board, and over 60 a gain. Schools with the same number also vary in cost, owing to the class of teacher, and stains of pupil teacher. Thus Orari Badge aor Orari South, with tb° «ame number, show a difference of £1 4s lOd per head : a difference 1 cannot account for, and needs explanation. There are only ten schools which are a gain to the Board. In othrr words, we pay more than the capit iuon allowance to 40 schools.” The Rev. Mr Barclay reported that he had inspected the buildings at Albury damaged by a gale, and he estimated th'> cost of repairs at £2O to £25. At Geraldine repairs wore needed to fences to the extent of £4 or £5, and to the £6O or £9O. As the Board had decided to erect a new school it would be better to erect a new bouse also, and if this wero determined on it would be better not to expend that amount.—After a brief dieeussion, it.was resolved oo the motion or Mr Barclay, seconded by Mr Howeil“That new school buildings being absolutely required at Geraldine, the Board as this year’s allocation now set aside a sum of £3OO, together with any supplementary grant grant for building purposes that for the current ye«r mav come into the hands of the Board. —Twenty pounds were granted for repairs at Albury. Mr Barclay, as chairman of the Schol irships Committee, reported that 23 candidates had entered for the examinations. The chairman stated that the following gentlemen retire by effluxion of time— The Rev. Mr Barclay, and Messrs Goldsmith and Jackson.

From the Orali Bridge Committee, asking for £2O, cost of a proposed classroom, as the present accommodation was inadequate.—Architect to report. From the Upper Waitobi Committee, respecting the removal of their teacher, and from the latter stating that the sum of 8s charged by her for paper-was “ for the whole year,” not for the Inspectors examination only, as reported by the Committee.—A petition asking for the removal of the teacher was also received. of the teacher. ... From the Pleasant Point Committee, asking the architect to. examine the roofs and report. —Agreed to. The Board resolved that the office should ba closed from December 22nd to January 2nd (inclusive), and that the next meeting be held on the 17th January.
