The barque Waitemata leftKaipara yesterday for Sydney with 328,000 feet of sawn kauri timber. The Under-Secretary for Public Works has written to the Waitamata County Council, Auckland, by direction of the Minister for Public Worki, to ascertain the aoonraoy of tha statement made in a petition as to the unemployed being dismissed from relief works by the Council whiie settlers were kept on who had land, cattle, etc. The Minister intimates that the grants were made for the relief of bona fide unemployed, and he desires to have an explanation and remarks on the petition as soon as convenient. The reply of the Council was that in the oases of the settlers referred to, unless relief work had been given they would have abandoned their sections. At the Supremo Court sittings at Inveroargill are to be tried two oases of attempted murder, one of manslaughter, three of arson, three of hrceny. Thomas Menziei, nephew of the late Dr. Metizies, left Dunalister station, Southland, rabbit shooting, Two hours later he was found dead in a woolshed with his boots off and shot through the head. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court commenced at Nelson yesterday morning before Judge Biohmond. The Premier, accompanied by Messrs Mitohelson and Fergus, left Dnnedin yesterday morning for mid Otago, via lnveroargill. They were accompanied by Messrs Allen, Fisb, Fitohett, Barron, T. Maokenxie, and Messrs Blair and Usher of the Pnblio Works Department. Largely attended meetings of soft goods merchants at Wellington and Ohrietohuroh have pacsed resolutions protesting against the appointment of Mr Shannon as a soft goods export.
