SERIOUS FIRE IN SYDNEY.
Sydney, Nov. 25. One of the most disastrous fires which have occurred in the city for seme years broke out at tea o’clock on Saturday eight. The building in which the fire originated was a large four-storey one situated in Market street, and occupied by the Sydney Evening News, Town and Country Journal, Illustrated News, and several professional offices. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade, as well as all volunteer brigades, were smartly on the scene. The origin of the tire is unknown but it must have bad a good hold when first discovered, as it spread with lightning rapidity, and in a few minutes there was nothing left to mark the fine block of offices but a pile of seething embers. The sight while the fire was raging was one of grandeur. It was quite two and a half hours before danger to adjacent premises was removed. The amount of the loss is unkuown, but the premises were insured in the Australian Mutual Insurance Company for £32,000, of which, however, ninetenths are reinsured in various offices. The other insurances are unknown, but it is believed that they amount to. fully £15,000. The whole of the machinery used iu connection with the publication or the papers mentioned was destroyed, but as the proprietors bad taken the precaution to have duplicates erected in a separate building, it is expected that publication will not be long delayed.
