THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
Washington, November?. The Presidential contest has resulted in the election of General Harrison. The numbers polled were—General Harrison, 2J5 ; Cleveland, 183. Hill has been elected Governor of Now York. Grant, the mayor, is suspected by the Democrat party of having bartered States for city votes. The Democrats insist on an official count being made of the votes in New York. They dim to have carried the States of Gblifornia, Illinois, and Indiana, and secured Mr Cleveland’s election, unless the New York vote is against them. New York, November 7, . The New Tork Herald asserts that President Cleveland’s defeat is attributable to Hewitt splitting the Democratic vote, and considers that possibly the Democrats have a majority in the representation. The Tribune states that the Republican victory was due to tho policy of liberty and protection. Its general comments Indicate that the anti-British policy influenced the election. President Chveland secured a majority in the southern States, while General Harrison had a majority in the north. New York determined the result.
