LABOUR TROUBLES.

Dunbdin, October 19

It is feared that a seamen's strike is likely to take place early next montli owing to a dispute which has arisen between the Union and, the U.S.S. Co. in reference to the NorWrn Steamship Co, Negotiations for a settlement have been carried on for the past three weeks, but these have 'fallen through, and it is said that unless a settlement is arrived at the seamen will go out on strike early Dext month, and this may probably lead to a general strike amongst the members of tjie Federated Seamen's Union and kindred societies. "Sydney, October 20. The miners arrested for taking part in the riot at Adamstown, four miles from Newcastle, appealed against the sentence passed by the Magistrate, and the case was heard yesterday. His Honor discharged the accused, and said that the verdict in regard to one prisoner was directly against the evidence, and 1 contrary to law. He recommended the Crown Proseoutor to inform the Attor-nej-General of the impropriety of trying any such cases m the coal districts, October 21. The conference of delegates from the mine managers and the miners has made satisfactory progress towards a settlement of the matters now in dispute. The men have given way to the minimum, and the managers to the maximum proposals, .With reference to the rumored strike of seamen in New Zealand the Steamship Owners'Association have'resolved not to permit the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand to be singled out, and declare that if the seamen engaged on the fleet of the latter company are withdrawn, they will be locked out by, the other companies. It is not improbable that the proprietors of the coal mines will amalgamate with the Ship Owners' Association in resisting the action taken by thb labor agitators. London, October 19.

The proprietors of the Leicestershire coal mines having refused to grant a demand of the men for an increase of wages, the latter have gone out on strike.
