The gain from such higher .price (in some cases fully Id per lb) will be realised by every milk supplier to the different factories. The ferret wss very large, fitch colored, and had apparently been at Urge a [considerable time, as its coat was very rough. - ‘ Scotch Entertainments, Mr A. •Purves gave one of his excellent Scotch ; entertainments at Q-eraldine on Wednesday [evening last. <The audience was small. Mr J. Ait ten occupied the chair. Mr Purves was again very successful in his rendition of Soettish songs, readings, &o. ; ‘During the evening Mr Nicholson gave a couple of recitations in a : manner that fairly brought down the house. On Thursday evening; : Mr Purves opened at. Hilton to a fair sized audience.
Fiee ax KaxahU.— On Tuesday morning last, Mr J. W. Jones, busbowner, of Kakahu, sustained a (serious- loss by fire. While absent at work in the bush, some half mile away, his house, which was situated at the top of a hill and in a somewhat exposed condition, caught (ire, presumably from a defeature chimney; ; Mrs Jones-tried her : utmost, but without success, to check the flames, and her little girl proceeded in search of her father. By the lime Mr Jones arrived the fire, fanned by 1 a strong breeze, had obtained such a hold upon the building as to preclude any chance of:its being saved. As a matter of fact all, that was saved was a chest at drawers and a sewing machine. The loss is estimated at about £2OO, and there is'no insurance. Mr Jones, his-wif*, and nine children ere compelled- lo- camp for: the present under a tent and tarpaulin. Great sympathy;is felt for Mr Jones in his misfortune, and, such help as his neighbors can give is freely offered. The MahikawaVa Goldfield. The folowing is an extract from a letter received oy a person at Geraldine from a friend who left that place,for the above goldfield a short time ago'" We were on the diggings,.but all the ground is pegged out; .nevertheless they are nob getting gold.- Two claims were coltomed yesterday and got nothing, not oven the color. The reports in the papers are a pack.of lies, and it ought to be put a stop to. The diggings are in a very s'eop place. The miners here nearly killed the prospectors for giving siibh a : false report. -Frye--hundred man have left, within the last few days, the field where it was reported they weue finding so much. They have found about a pound weight of gold, and that is all. Where they found that was in a solid rook. The field, as they call it, is on the face of a range. There is only room for about twenty men to work. It is a shame for,people to be blinded a* they have been.
