ALLEGED LIBEL.
At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, yesterday, before Mr C. Whiioloord, E.M., and Messrs P. Guinness and F. J. Kimball, J.P.’e, Thomas Brown Bain appeared to answer an information for having written and published a libel on Mr John Ollivier, R.M. Mr Joynt appeared for the defendant, and Mr Holmes appeared in support of the information, and explained that the accused appeared on a charge of defamatory libel on tbe administration of justice. On Sept. 26 Mr John Ollivier heard an information which was dismissed on September 27tb. He was employed to defend the accused. From wbal he heard on the Saturday following he found that a defamatory libel was being circulated. He was accused of having spent tbe evening of Wednesday with Mr Ollivier, and having bribed or corrupted him to give an improper judgment. Tbe evidence showed that tbe alleged libel bad been printed at Joseph Ivess’ office to the order of .Bain, who before getting 'hem printed consulted James Csygill, a printer, who recommended him to go to Ivess’ office. Holmes and Lougbrey, solicitors, offered a reward of £5 for information as to where they bad baen printed, for they bore no imprint. Accused reserved bis defence and was committed for trial and admitted to bail on bis own recognisances. A charge of libel on John Holmes was adjourned for a week.
