GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held yesterday. Present—Messrs W. Balfour (chairman), Mack’iy, Barker, Howell, and Hayhurst. Ten residents in Seadown petitioned against the water-race being constructed through the'r lands, as hjnrious to their interests. Two other residentssent a similar petition. The chairman said all the ratepayers interested had not signed, and ho thought until that was the case the wo>k could not be stopped.—Letters,asking for a supply of water from the Seadown waterrice, were also received. The Temuka Road Board wrote regarding damage done to road by water-race.—The clerk to the Council explained that the engineer hid visited the locality. The Woodbury Cemetery Board wro'e in reference to the proposed cemetery. The funds of the Board had been all expended, and these had proved inadequate. They therefore asked that the Council give a grant-in-aid towards the cemetery, in order to comply with the requirements of the Cemeteries Act.—Oona : deration postponed. The Minister of Justice wrote stating that Mr J. Aihwell had been appointed cleik of the Temuka Licensing Committee. A letter from the Pnperiy lax Department was read, having reference to an under-assessment of certain lands in the Oounly.—lt was resolved—“ That (be Proper y Tax Ooramissmner bo advised that no objection was raised to the 1885 valuation as shown to the Road Board and County Council, prior to the Assessment Court sitting, but that objection would most likely have been made to the reductions subsequently made by the Assessinent Court, and more especially to the £20,000 reduction made in the valuation by the Wellington authorities, after the sitting of the Assessment Court.” Messrs Deavoll and Barton were granted a slaughtering license for Saltwater Greek, oa condition that they do not pollute the creek. Consideration of the control of the Upper Pareora bridge was deferred. The Waimate Council has control at present, and £3OOO is required to repair the bridge. The Engineer’s report as follows was read and dealt with;—“Water Races The protective works at (he intake of the Rangitata and Orari race »re |now com.

Bridges- - Tho protect've works at the Opihi bridge, Main road, are now finished, and the approach to the Uppir Opihi bridge, near Raincliff, has been repaired and protected in a satisfactory manner.”

A letter was received from solicitors on behalf of Mr O. G. Tripp, Orari Gorg •, asking compensation for taking land for water race, ths sum being £59. This sum did not ioc'uds prespective damages, should the river overflow the race. —ft was resolved— 1 * That failing the acceptance by Mr Tiipp of his own terms for land the Council do then take steps under the Public Works Act to acquire the same.”

Accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
