Taranaki, was played at Bawera on Tuesday, and resulted in a win for the Englishmen by two goals and a try to a try., Customs Betenub. —The Customs revenue for the month of September was £126,771 14s IQd, against £106;866 6s lOd in the same month last year, and £136,618 in August. Alhambba Skating Rink-.—The roller skating season at this rink was brought te an end on Tuesday evening last. Skating having been indulged in for some time, a polo match was played between teams of six, chosen respectively by Messrs W. Stonehouse, and T. Sherratt, The former team won the match after a spirited game by two goals to one.

Lath Tbaih.—Tbe Inst train from Christ* churoh yeiterday evening was an hour late. As usual no information as to the cause of the delay could be ascertained at the railway station, but a passenger informed us that tbe cause of the delay was high winds and care* fulness as regards the consumption of coal.

Pbksbttbbian Chuboh Bazaab. The bazaar in connection with the Presbyterian Church, Temuka, will taka place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 15, 16, and 17. Contributions of money, materials, or work will be thankfully received* by tbe stallholders or the hon. secretaries, Messrs K. F. Gray and H. Cross. Clearing Sale. Ths clearing sale of the stock and implements in the Paterson estate,' which was held yesterday by Mr E. F. Gray, was an immense success, the auctioneer staling that it was one of the most successful sales he has aver conducted. All the implements, pigs grass seed, grain, and cows were sold at extremely good prices. The sale will-be continued this morning, beginning with the sheep. Amongst, this flock are some of the purest-bred and best sheep in New Zealand, and it ie anticipated that splendid prices w;ll be realised. Horses and everything else will also be sold. The order of sale for to-day wilt be found in our advertising colnms.

Uniform Globing Movement.—A meeting of tradesmen of Temuka interested in securing a uniform hour of closing was held in Mr A. W. Giz a ’s office on y last. Present—Messrs J. W. Milos (who occupied the chair), J, Brown, A, R. Allan, G. H. Mogridge, J. W. Velvin, J. Sim, and A. W. Gaza.. The present business arrangements were discussed, and it . was resolved on the motion of Mr J. Brown, seconded by Mr J. WTYelyin—“That in the opinion of thii meeting it ie desirable that all stores in Temuka be closed each evening at 6 p.ra, with (he exception of Saturday, when the hour should be 10 p.m., and further, that the Thursday half-holiday eboull be adopted.” It was decided to get an agreement embodying the above resolution signed by all t-ade. - men, so as to ensure unanimity. Qebaldinb Domain Boabd. —A meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday night. Present —Me»sre W. 8. Mielin (Chairm*n), J, Mundell, R. Taylor, A. Sherralt, N. Dunlop, J, Williams, and A, While. A , letter was received from tbe Board’s solicitor, staling that the lessee of the bush park had refused to sign the lease of Ihe Sim*. The Chairman was authorised to consult the Board’s solicitor as to tbe aoHon that should be taken. It was decided to reverse tbe top hinge of a smell gate leading into the bush park, so as to prevent the gate being lifted off its hinges. It was dsoided to notify oil defaulters for rent that uuhss the same was paid within a month legal action would bo taken for Iha recovery of the same. It was also decided to call tendars for trimming the fences round the small park, and for the purchase of the grass in the small park art! cricket aval. This being all the business the meeting adjourned. South Cantebbuuv Educational Institute. —The annual general meeting of this Institute was held in Timaru on Saturday. Mr Aitken, President, occupied the chair, and there was n good attendance. The annual report and balance sheet, the latter shewing a credit balance of 16s lOd, but also liabilities to the extent of £2 10s, were read and adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted os foil >ws ;—President : W. J. Aitken, B.A. ; Vice-president—Mr J. Wood ; Secretary and Treasurer—Mr F, W. Wake, B.A. ; Committee of Management.—Messrs Steven, Thomson, Mahan, Watson, Valentino and Woolstein. A motion was draft'd by the President lobe forwarded to Iho Board of Education showing Iho advisability of substituting “working average” for “sc i t average.” The report of tbs sub-cumoiittoe appointed to deal with ths pupil teachers’ syllabus was read, and with a few minor alterations was adopted. Ths President read a rather lengthy and interesting address, and the meeting terminated. Hilton School Committee. The monthly meeting of this Committee wia held on the 28th Sept. Present—Mr B. Skinner (Chairman), W. Beattie, L. H. Hooke, P, Ryan, and W. Hide. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Vis ting Committee reported the school to be working satisfactorily. The Master’s report was read, which showed the average attendance to be very low. It was decided, on (he motion of Mr Rooke, that the Master furnish the Committee with the names of the parents of children nob attemding school, and that the compulsory clauses be brought into force. The school was inspected on the 16th Aug., and the report to hand is satisfactory. It was decided to call tenders for the cutting and burning of the fences round the school grounds. Mr Rooke applied for the use of the school on some Sunday for the Salvation Armv. —Granted on condition that it did not interfere with the present services in the school. Messrs Rooke and Hide were appointed Visitors tor the month. The school will reopen on Monday 8 h October. Woodburt School Committee.— The monthly meeting of this Gomaii'tee was held oc Mondiy evening, October Ist. Pr-eent —Messrs Dean (Chairman), Flatman, Macdonald, Heatley, and McKenzie. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, A letter whb received from Mr Purveis making application for the uee of the schoolroom on Oct. 10 h. It was resolved that the same could not be let oq any but Friday evenings. It was decided to hold a concert and ball on Filday evening, December 16ih, in aid of the price fund, and that all preliminary arrangements be made at the next meet ing: of ih* Committee, in November. The : Inspector's report was read, beating date September sih, 1888, and waa considered highly satisfactory. The Chairman stated he had, as directed, written to the Board of Education, asking thi Board to send out their architect to examine the roof of the school and report tb the Board the result thereon. After the usual vote of thanks to the chair, the meeting terrain ted.

Accidents. —A little boy about six years oil, a son of Mr Hill's, Gapes’* V-lley, had Ins thigb broken on Tuesday evening list by being kicked by a horse. It appear* that the hone ia used for the ohildr-n to ride to school on, and the little ft How was either holding on to the stirrup or the horse’s tail, when it lashed out with the abure result. Dr Fish attended the sufferer, and the litfc e fellow is now doing as well as can be expected.—Mr Stewart, of Orari, with one of his daughters, had a narrow escape from a serious escident on Thursday last. He bad been* visiting the Rev. G. Barclay, and on leaving the manse late in the evening the horse bolted for home. diming to the Waihi river, the horse dashed full speed into it, smashing the swingle tree and some of the harness.. the horse missed the proper ford, and was-just about to scramble up a steep bank on the Orari side, when Mr R. P. Welle, of Gapes’ Valley, who had lost his horse and was walking home, being attracted to the spot by the noise, caught the animal by the head and held it. The Rev. Mr Archibald, who is staying at the mams and saw the bolt, followed along the road, and seeing the predicament Mr Stewart and his daughter was in, got Mr Barclay’s trap qnd took them out of their own damaged buggy. The horse and the occupants of the trap were j uninjured. i
