FIRST DAT.
The first day’s racing in connection with this meeting took place on the the course, Orari, on Thursday. The morning broke foggy and-drizilihg, and grave fears were entertained that the day would be wet. About half-past nine, however, the sun came out, and the rest of the day was simply perfect for racing. The attendance was the largest that has been present at any of the Club’s fixtures for a considerable time past. The uerth train brought a good number of visitors, and the special train from Timaru was well patronised. The rain that had fallen during the two previous days had put the course, which was getting rather hard owing to the dry weather, into the pink of condition. As usual, the arrange* ments made by the Club were about perfect, arid everythieg passed off without a hitch occurring. Mr F. Wilson Smith, the Club’s new Secretary, deserves a special word of praise for the willing and courteous assistance be rendered to the Press representatives and others. Mr Lawson, too, was, as usual, a most obliging Clerk of the Scales. Mr Meikle wielded the Starter’s flag to the general satisfaction. Very little fault was to he found with the handicapping, as the finishes were in all cases well contested. The Club are to be complimented for their punctuality, the first itenl on the card, the Maiden Hurdles, being started almost to the minute advertised. The Geraldine Brass Band; under acting-bandmaster Mr W. Stonehouse, was on the ground, and added cod|iiderablj to the pleasure of the outing;. Messrs Mason and Roberts had ode' of their totalisators on the course, apd put through £ll9O during the day. fhe racing throughout was of a reryNgood description, and spotting the winner was no. easy matter, the knowing Was often proving themselves at fault.

Ths weather on the second day was all that could be desired, and, as the course wse rolled in the morning, if was much better fer running on than on the first day. The attendance, too, was much larger, and the raoisg was splendid. The handicupper may well be congratulated on the excellence of his work. It was one of the best and most successful-rsmngmeet-iings ever held on the racecourse, and not- ■* single hitch or accident marred the day s •njoyment. The following is a report of the various events
Handicap Hurdle Race, ef 50 eovs.; over 6 flight* of hurdles. About 1\ ■tile*. „ , Mr T. The horse* got away well together aod cleared the first two hurdles in pretty close company, the Prmiar leading, with Mammoo second, and Reuben third. At the third hurdle Reuben and Trapper bolted off the conrae, and did not return to it. No change took place, in the race thence to the end. The Premier led - by about a doaen yards, Mammoo coming second, with Normanby close up, and tbia order was maintained to the finish. The race was an uneventful one, the Jeader never Raving been called upon to »un, although he went at high speed, The bolting of Trapper ia explained as being the result of « remarkable accident. The horse was going at a rapid pace, and erhengearing the third hurdle ho caught a, stone in bia hoof, and flung it sky high, itriking hi* rider io the ' th ! moment the rider was rendered blind and almost stunned, and consequently unable to direct Rim. The accident, however, resulted in nothing more serious than momentary ineapacity on tho part.of his rider to perform his duties, but tin* was sufficient to put him out of the race. Time, 3raln 2iec. grandstand, where be was collared by Idalia, and a ueck-and-neck race between the two followed, with Medea some three or four lengtha in the rear. This order was maintained all round the back of ih n course, Meden looking as if losing ground, bat in the turn coming into the straight, Idalia forged ahead and Medaa came im6 second place. After one or two false starts the field got away in an indifferent mannor, Kimberley leading. In passing the grand stand Tarantalus led, with Erin go-Bragh and College Boy yery close up, Pairician a quarter of a length behied them, and Kimberley bringing up the roar at a distance of about a length. Henceforward the race was one of the prettiest ever seen, The whole five ran in a ruck, neither having a length advantage of the ether. Coming down the straight the three placed horsea ran almost a dead heat, aad from the grandstand no one ceuld aay which wae first. The judge, however, who took pains with being exact, placed them as above, but there waa not half a head difference between them. Passing the grandstand Kitty was a long way in the lead, with Semolina second, and the Libs of Gewrie third, the others being distributed well over a distance of about 15 chains. Random was, however, going through the horses pretty amarlly, but Kitty was so far ahead and going so well that it waa expected she could not be caught. At the, back of tbe course, however, ahe began to show signs of flagging, and in rounding the turn die was passed at a rapid pace by Wakanui. At this time Marengo waa a few lengths behind, and Random a few chains, the latter having broken into a gallop lost some ground. Coming down the straight Marengo took the lead, and on nearing the grandstand Random came well in to second place.
