Rabbit Fence.— The tender of Mills and Co., of Wellington, has been accepted for forty-fire miles of rabbit fencing material, to complete the fence in South Canterbury from Lake Pukaki to the Waitin rirer.

Wesleyan Cbbboh, Temuia.—The Rsv. R. S. Bunn will conduct the serrioes at this Church to-morrow. The subjects rf his addresses will be found in our advertising columns. He will conduct serrioe at Hilton in the afternoon.

Public Wobks Expbhbitubk. The expenditure of the Public Works Depsrtment for the five mouths ending August list wan £202,000, the smillest. amount ever known for a similar period. Suspected Ihcendiaeihc.— The burning of the public sobool at Blenheim has led to the conclusion that it was the work of an incendiary, and the people there are apprehensive ef other acts of a similar nature being perpetrated. The building was valued at £2500.

Highly Satispactobt.— The directors of the Geraldine Dairy Factory have been successful in selling the whole of the cheese at the factory at a satisfactory price. By account ssles just received from London they learn that their last shipment of cheese realised from 53s to 56s per owt.

Deb amation 01 Chaeacxbe.—A writ has been served on Mr D. M. Luokie, Commissioner of the Government Insurance Department, at the instance of Michael Oormick Hickey, at one time canrasser in the service of the department, who claims £690 damages for alleged defamatory statements in a telegram. The case will be beard at the civil sitting of the Supremo Court next month. Postponed Bail.-— The bill advertised for last evening in the Yo unteer Hall, Tetnuka, did not take place, .owing to the promoter of it, Mr J. J. Heap, being disappointed by ti e musician engaged. The ball will take place at a future date. In our adv.'rtiamg columns, Mr Heap apologises for any inconvenience ho may have caused anyone who intended to bo present. Mahakipawa, —The Minister of Mines visits Mahakipawa next week. A gentleman who has been on a visit to Mahakipawa reports that there are about 1000 men there and at Waikakaho, and giod alluvial gold is being got. Tha qparlz reefs have not been tested yet, but a number of experienced Thames minors hare arrived for the purpose of working them. If found payable, a number of leases will bo applied for. Colonial Bank.— At tha annual meeting of the shareholders of the above Bank, held is Dunedin on last Wednesday, it was shown that a profit of £16,135 had been made during the year, and a dividend of 7 per cent, was ordered to be paid. The Chairman, the Hon. George Maclean, spoke hopefully of the prospects of the Bank, and said the profits made last year were higher than in any previous year. The increase m prices would bring a mAlioa into the colony this year. LOSS 01 Shibi.—The North Otago Tioies estimates that from 70,000 to 80,000 sheep perished through snowstorms m the Upper Waitaki. The exact loss wilt not be known till shearing. The fine weather that has been experienced in the interior lately has, however, put new life into large numbers of sheep that were on the brink of starvation. The sheep have picked up wonderfully, so much so that it is now thought that the spring grass and the lambing will have little bad BoatXfioSSwiT—By~a boat accident at Cape Turnagain, Napier, last Thursday, four men, named Charles McCarthy, second mate of the s.s. Kahu, James Watson, Joseph Clarke, and David Bruce, seamen of the same steamer, were drowned. There were five me* in a boat landing oarge, when it capsited. The only one who reached the shore was McAlister, the first mate, who landed exhausted, but recovered on being attended to. McAlister is the only Napier man, the others being from the south. McCarthy was formerly master of the schooner Cora. No further particulars are to hand. Tme Gotbenoe. —At a meeting in Wellington last Wednesday, 'His Excellency the Governor said hie term of office would expire in a few months, and it would bs with regret be would have to leave the colony. There is not the slightest doubt but that the people will regret bis departure, for a batter Governor Now Z aland never bed. He has been both useful and ornamental. At the next meetijg of the Cabinet the propriety of making representation to the Imperial Government to appoint Sir William for another term will be considered. It is understood that he is not unwiling to serve a second term. Volunteer Social. The last grand social gathering of the season in connection with the Geraldine took place in their hall on Thursday evening last. Like its predecessors the gathering was most en]oyable. The room was decorated more elaborately even than usual with ferns, flags, and Chinese lanterns, etc. The refreshment table was under the supervision of Mesdames Storehouse and Boughton, which is sufficient guarantee of its quality and abundance. Mr Binskin acted as M.C,, and Mr Figoni supplied his usual excellent inusic.

The Company contended they were not carrying on bueinees, they were existing only to die, and their operations at Gisborne could only be considered a braneh of the bueinees. Tbe effect of eo wide a construction of the Act would be to tax every foreign company holding assets in New Zealand. The Oonrt held that by the articles of association it was clear the Company existed for the purpose of taking over and cultivating land in New Zealand, and therefore ruled it carried on business within the meaning of the Stamp Act, 1882, and was liable to pay the maximum annual license fee of £2OO, ,

Thb Rim.—There was a fair attendance at the rioking carnival in the Zealandia rink, Temuka, last Thursday evening. Some of the dresses wore very grotesque and laughter-provoking. Sinking and dancing was kept up until about 4 a.m. en Friday. Welcome Retkeai Lod«, 1.0.Q.T., Gehaldine.— An open meeting of the above Lodge was held last Monday evening. There was a good attendance, and Bro. W. Maslin, occupied the chair. The following programme was successfully gone through:—Song, “Children of the city,” Miss R. Dean; temperance address, Rev. W. J. Dean ; song, “ Strangers yet,” Mies M. Dunlop , reading, " Fledged with wine,” Sister B. Logan; song, “The broken pitcher,” Miss F. Hawke ; address, Bro. W. Maslin ; song, “ The old cathedral, Miss E. Dean ; song, “ The golden shore,” Miss M. Dunlop. A vote of thanks was passed to the various performers en the motion of Bro. W. Ooltmen, seconded by Bro. Willoughby. The singing of the National Anthsiu brought the meeting to a close.

Gehaldinh CorNTT Akolbbs’ Sooibtt. —The annual meeting of the members of the Geraldine County Anglers’ Society was held at the Wallingford Hotel, Temuka, last night. Present —Messrs Flint, Gray, J. W. Velvin, F. Coira, A. W. Gaze, and Mason (hon. ssc.) Mr Flint was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and confirmed. The secretary submitted n balance-sheet, which showed that the total receipts for the year amounted to £lO 6s lid, including a balance of £3 15s 6d brought forward. The expenditure amounted to £6 7s sd, leaving a balance to credit of the Society. The balance-sheet was adopted as read, on the motion of Mr Velvin, seconded by Mr Coira. Messrs R. P. Aspinall, F. K. Gray, and W. Dale were elected members of the Sooiety. The election of officers was then proceeded with. Mr A. M. Clark was re-elected president, and Messrs W. Deßenzy and F. Archer were re-elected vice-presidents. Mr Mason tendered his resignation as secretary and treasurer. He found it a difficulty in giving the amount of attention to the duties that ha desired. Mr Coira moved that Mr Flint be elected secretary and treasurer. In doing so betcomplimented the late secretary for the manner in which he had fulfilled his duties, and expressed his belief in that bis example would be followed by his successor. The nomination was seconded by Mr B. F. Aspinall, and carried unanimously. Accounts to the amount of £2 19s 7d were passed for payment. On the motion of Mr Coira the secretary was authorised to arrange for the purchase of two prizes won in the last competition and not yet presented. The following gentlemen were elected a committee Messrs Findlay, W. G. Aspinall, J. A. Young, K. F. Gray, N. 0. Nicholas, G. J. Mason and Dr J. S Hayes. A vote of thanks was pasisd to the officers of the past season, especial mention being made of Messrs Inwood end Deßenzy, who in addition to other services had placed their fishing water at the disposal of the Society. On the motion of Mr Gaze, the secretary was requested to make inquiries, re securing to the Soeieey the privilege of fishing over the Winchester and Ohapi waters. Mr Yelyin moved, and it was carried—“ That it be a recommendation to the committee that two competitions be held, the first in November, and the second in February, and additional prize be given for minnow fishing.” A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to the late score'ary for his services. Mr Mason having replied, the meeting terminated in the usual way. Mr Fish’s constituents have presented him with a purse of ninety sovereign!. SYNOPSIS OF ADVERTISEMENTS.
