COALMINERS’ STRIKE.
Sydney, September 14.
Little surprise is fell hi-rc at the failure of the conference yesterday between tbe coalmasters and tbe men, A large number of miners have left England for Newcastle under three years’ engagement. A further batch will follow shortly. It is stated that an offer has been made to the mine masters to bring out 3000 Belgians to take the place of the men out on strike.
The non-Unionist men working in a small colliery at Burwood, two miles from Newcastle, refused to agree to the request of the Unionists to cease work, and during the night an attempt was made to blow the entrance of the mine up with dynamite. Very little damage was done.
September 15.
The official pay sheets of last week’s work at the Newcastle collieries show the lughest wages per man per day .waa 13d 61, while the lowest was 10s 3d. The general average was lls 60.

Owing to the strike of the Newcastle miners several English steamers ha ye been engaged to convey coal to Australia. Shipowners generally feel inMsposed lo place their vessels on the Australian berth, fearing that the strike in the colony will prevent steamers from coaling and obtaining return cargoes.
