News has been received that Major Barttelot, who was in charge of one portion of Stanley’s expedition, has been murdered by Arab carriers. Jameson, who was with the party, will succeed him in the command,
After the murder of Major Barttelot, his expedition returned to Stanley Falls to reorganise, September 14.
From the latest information to hand from Central Africa it is feared lippo Tip deserted Major Barttelot.
Major Edmond Musgtove Barttelot is the second son of • well-known Sussex Baronet, Sir Walter Barttelot-Bartlelot, 0.8., M.P., whose family have been seated at Stopham, near Fulbornugh, ever since the Conquest. Majoj- Barttelot was born in 1859, and was consequently in bis 29*h year. He was educated at .Rugby and at Sandhurst, and was a Major Ist Battalion Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), tie served in the Afghan war.J 1879-80 (medal with clasp); in the Egyptian campaign, 1882 (medal with clasp and Khedive’s medal) j and in the Soakim campaign, 1885.
