INTERPROVINCIAL NEWS.

The jury at the inquest on the body of Captain Bayley, of the ill-fated Colonist, having imputed negligence to the Wellington harbour authorities in not despatching early assistance, the harbour master states that immediately on the receipt of information that the vessel was in distress he made arrangements for the despatch of the Australia to render assistance, and instructed the pilot boat and crew to take them out to help the vessel. When the Australia reached the spot, the vessel had broken up, and nothing could be seen but wreckage. It is probable that in consequence of the strike of coal miners, and consequent inability of steamers to obtain coal at Newcastle, the Union S.S. Company will shortly withdraw one or two of their boats from the Sydney trade. They estimate that the strike is now costing them £4OOO or £SOOO a month.

A large number of mining exhibits for the Melbourne Exhibition from the Thames, Karangahape, To Aroha Maretoto, Whangamata, Waihekuri, and Wailii claim*, were received in Auckland on Tuesday. They are splendid specimens, and very rich both in gold and silver. Ttie principal supply is from the Thames and Te Tnis qmntity, which comprise* 57 boxes, is to be shipped to Melbourne by the s.s. Mararoa on Thursday. The body of E. Gormley, cab proprietor, was found on To Aio foreshore, Wellington, on Tuesday morning. Mr Fergus goes south on Monday on his way to Melbourne, stopping at Christchurch and Dunedin to confer with volunteer officers regarding the new regulations,
