COALMINERS’ STRIKE.
Sydney. September 4.
r lbe miners of the southern district have demanded from the masters an increase of the rotes paid for hewing coal, and it is feared tha*, unless the request is conceded, the men will go out on strike.
'Thirty vise’s have discharged their crews in cons quence of the Newcas'le strike,
One of the principal southern coal mines was discovered to be on fire to day, and it is snspec’ed that pora ll of the men on strike are concerned in the »ffa : r. The fire was fortunately ex inguislied before much damage wos done.
Owing to the ex u rtions of Mr Bunk' r, MiniVer of Lan's,. a conference bet ween the coalmtd'ers and the miners on the matters in dispute has been arranged. Mklboukite, S*p tern her 3.
One local foundry discharge I 200 men on Saturday. A number of others, and also a number of factories, will discharge hands during the week.
September 4. There are now fully 1000 wharf hands out owing 'o the Newcastle strike.

The export of co«l last week was 4315 ton*, vr 2000 being sent away on Saturday.
