TEMUKA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

A general meeting of the newlyformed Temuka Caledonian Society was held last evening in the Temuka Hotel. There were about 25 members present, and the chair was occupied by Mr D. Henry. .Mr Henry road the advertisement calling the meeting, after which the Secretary read the minutes of the previous meetings, which were confirmed. Letters were received from Mr Rhodes accepting the position of Patron, and offering £5 towards the funds. Also from the Oddfellows offering to give up Boxing Day to the Society for their sports, provided the Society agrees to pay to the Oddfellows the sum of £lO per year for a term of five years. The rules of the Society were Iben read and adopted. The election of officers was then proceeded with. On the motion of Dr Hayes, Mr A; M. Clark was elected president for the ensuing year. Mr Clark, on taking the chair as president, said be wished to thank them for the honor they had conferred upon him in electing him as their first president. If they were all to put their shoulder to tho wheel they would have a first-class Society soon. Anything in the Temuka district ought to succeed. They had the best land and the best district in New Zealand, and they ought to have the beet Society. They would see that the Society had objects in view besides athletics, but it would depend on the encouragement they racoived. The promotion of athletics was, of course, the first coaeideration, but he hoped that in course of time they would have funds for other purposes. (Applause.) The following were then elected as a Board of Directors Messrs Quinn, Henry, Hayes, Allan, Law son, Scannell, Blyth, Naughton, Bayne, W. McLeod, J. McLeod, Ackroyd, McKay, Guild, J. Murray, Waddell, Fraser, Grant, Biaset, and Gray. Mr Quinn moved a hearty vote ol thanks to Mr Rhodes for his kind donation, and it was carried by acclamation. The letter from the Oddfellows was then taken into consideration. Mr Lawson said he would not give tenpence. Dr Hayes did not think Boxing Day would be the best. He thought the 36th December was the best, as there was no sports nearer than Dunedin. He moved that the sports be held on the 361 h of December. The motion was seconded by Mr Quinn. Mr Scannell said the only counterattraction was a Regatta and Flower show in Timaru, After some discussion, it was agreed unanimously to hold the sports on the 16th of December, Anniversary Day. On the motion of Mr Twomey, seconded by Mr Henry, it was resolved—“ That this Society thanks the Oddfellows’ Society for their letter, but that it cannot entertain the proposal, as a different day has been selected.” On the motion of Mr Twomey, seconded by Mr Henry, it was resolved co leave all matters of detail to the directors. A vote of thanks to the chairman was carried unanimously, and (the meeting adjourned.

MEETING OF DIRECTORS. At a meeting of the Directors held immediately afterwards, Messrs Quinn and Hayes were elected Vice-Presidents of tire Society.

Mr Mogridge was unanimously elected Secretary, and Mr John Lawson Treasurer, The Secretary was instructed tr. arrange for print ng member’s tickets, etc. On the motion of Ur Hayes, the following gentlemen were appointed a subcommittee, with power to add to their number, to arrange for an entertainment, viz., Messrs Henry, Allan, McLeod, Blyth, and the Secretary. It was decided to meet again on Wednesday next to consider a programme of sports, etc. It was decided to keep the Society’s account at the Bank of New Zealand. The meeting then terminated.
