Newcastle, Augu-l 28. The proprietors of the West Wdlsend coil mine have engaged a number of navvies to open the min-. Messrs Melville and Wdker, members representing the district of Northumb rhnd in the Legislative Assembly, announce their intention of rg taling in favor of adding a new clause to the Mining Act now in operation, providing that unless m’nes are conatant'y worked the leases be cancelled, Melbourne, August 27. Advices have been roosived from Cardiff offering to lend coal here by steamers at 25s per ton. August 28. The building trade i seriously affected by the miners’ strike. Bricks have advanced 6 shillings per thousand, and many contractors wit be ruined if compelled to complete their engagements at the increased prices. Every day vessels are being laid up and the crews paid off. The strike is also affecting foundries, the proprietors of which are discharging many hands. Sydney, August 27. The engineer to the Sydney Gas Company is of opinion that ho cannot maintain the present gas supply for more than a month. la order to strengthen the hands of the miners in their strike, the Seamen’s Union have decided to withdraw the ballot rn connection with the Maritime Libor Council difficulty, and also to levy £1 per mouth on members of the Unions. Adelaide, August 28. The majority of the trade unions are against the action taken by the Newcastle miners, and the question of forwarding funds to their assistance has not yet been settled.
Orders are being freely received by the Auckland coal companies in consequence of the Newcastle strike. The Kamo Coal Company have orders for 3000 tons for the Union Company’s steamers, and 1000 tons for the s.s. Balmoral Castle. Coal hns advanced 2s Gi per ton at Greymouth.
