THE GREAT ERUPTION IN JAPAN.
Thursday Island, Aug. 22. Details are lo band concerning a terrible eruption in Japan. The island of Bun Tig Yun, a hundred square miles in extent, was the scene ot the visitation, which took place on July 14tb. The shock was most violent, and almost paralysed the inhabitants, who numbered about 2000. The town was virtually split in two by the upheaval, and large numbers of terror-stricken in habitants were swallowed up in the chasm caused by the eruption. Many of the people rushed lo the foot ot the mountains and were killed by falling Uva and boulders, Nearly all the houses in tbe island were destroyed and most of the residents were killed. The eruption lasted from morning till dark, and next day fire sprang out from the crater. It was in the panic that ensued that most of the lives were lost. The mountain virtually fell on the town, burying large number?, and many who escaped were subsequently starved to death.
