INTERPROVINCIAL NEWS.

Shortly before 4 on Friday afternoon Mr T. H. Potts, an old resident of Canterbury, dropped dead in a shop at Ohriaichu'cli. He was about 60 years old ; was a member of the Board of Governors of Ornterbury College, and was a member of the Provincial Council in bygone days. He was one of the best naturalis's in the colony, and w&s widely known by his series of papers entited “ Out in the Open.” The s.s. Wanaka, which railed South from Auckland on Friday, took a quantity of goods supplied by Auckland manufacturers for the protectionist bmquet at Wellington. The consignment includes flower, biscuits, confectionery, mimral water, cordials, sauces, honey, sugar, oysteis, etc. Other supplies are promised. The Auckland Industrial Association have written to J. C. Firth asking him to attend on their behalf. A deputation representing headmasters of Wellington citj schools waited on the Minister of Eduotion for the purpose of bringing under bis notice certain articles recently published in a local paper alleging that immorality existed in Stale schools. The Minister said that he did not wonder that a deep widespread feeling of indignation bad been excited when a newspaper staled without any qualification whatever that the public schools of the colony had become moral pitfalls. If the Board would pass a resolution asking Government to appoint a commissnn or appoint persons ■occupying some judicial capacity to institute an inquiry, he was inclined to think they would be wiling to accede to the request. John Collins, a well-known charac’er now awaiting trial for larceny, escaped from gaol at Wanganui on Saturday morning, but was soon recaptured. He was in the exercise yard, and climbed over the fence, which is rather low. An alarm was given at once, and Sergeant Kelly followed him up, finding him in the cemetery. He covered him with a revolver and Collins gate in, and was back in gaol within an hour of his escape. The claim of Willis, ironmonger, for £390 from the Norwich Union and £2OO feom the Equitable, in connection with a fire in his ironmongery store at Blenheim in May last, was submitted to arbitration. The court found for the insured for the whole amount of his policy, with costs agaiustthe companies £8417a 6d The arbitrators considered the presence of a full stock at the time of the fire fully proved, and that not the slightest imputares'ted on the character of the insured.
