PROPOSED PAPER MILL.
“ The Times says:— There seems a probability of another manufacture of local importance being established in New Zealand. Within the last day or two rumors of the initiation of a large paper-making industry have been going tbe rounds, and in connection with them we may state Ihnt we have seen Mr Einsell, the avant courier of the undertaking, and he assures us it is likely to come off. Partington’s sulphile process is, it seems, the ground-work of this new discovery. By it paper can be made out of woody fibre, and at very small cost. A Sydney syndicate have the matter in hand, and have resolved to start a mill in New Zealand at any convenient place centrally situated and with raw materials to work upon hrndy. We have seen the plans of the proposed mill and correspondence on the entire subject with Mr Partington, and are satisfied with the bona fides of the affair. The Government have been communicated with, and have promised to give whatever facility they can for starting the undertaking. By it white paper of any quality, from common white “ news *’ to fine printings and writings, can be produced. We wish the syndicate every success. Such a paper-mill will, indeed, be a boon to the Colony. We may add that white pine has been tested and found particularly suitable for the manufacture of paper. Mr Partington is the sole patentee of the process for the whole world.” We have written to the Times to the effect that no place in New Zealand offers better facilities than Temuka, with the view of getting the factory located here.
