George Willis, a strong young laborer, after travelling over 300 miles looking in vain for work, smashed a lamp in Mastertonon Wednesday night, and received fourteen days’ imprisonment on tbe fol'ow'ng mo'ning.
A curious caw was beard at the Dunedin Cty Police Court yesterday. One of the demimonde was charged with perjury and her counsel went into the box and swore that in the other Court she had never taken the oath. The information was dismissed.
An inquest was held nt Human! on Thursday afternoon on the body of Mrs Burton, wife of a large farmer. There aoems to have been suspio ; on of foul play, but the post mortem showed that death resulted from apoplexy, accelerated by 'dr<Dk. Her husband recently prosecuted her brother, Bowie, for horse stealing, aud the latter was committed for trial.
The escaped French convicts, Carey and Gasparine, were again charged before the Police Court «t Auckland on Thursday morning, charged with stealing a cutter from New Caledonia. No evidence being forthcoming, Dr Giles refused to grant a further remand, and discharged the prisoners. Gisparino was farther charged with stealing tobacco and cigars from Auckland premises, and was remanded for a week.
A telegram from Auakland yesterday, says {— “ Carey aud Qaspsrine, the escaped French convicts, have been spirited away, and taken it is believed to Wol'ington, under secret instructions. Carey was rearrested, while Gaspariae was taken out of tbe lockup by the detectives without the knowledge of the lockupkeeper. The police refuse to give information as to the authority on which the prisoners ware removed.” G»ptain Bendatl, and Mr Daniels, of the Union Company, are at Westport on business connected with tbs launching of
the Suva. The preliminary enquiry com* menced yesterday. The vessel remsins in the same position at high tide. The sea* wish over the badge, and the hull is quite full of water. The forecastle, g dley, cabin, etc., are completely wrecked, and the interior of the steamer wears a desolate appearance. The greater portion of the bulwarks is also destroyed, but the deck ehd bull are little damaged. The steamer Is now lying almost broadside on up to the Was, and is embedded in about six feet of sand, ; ,
The friends of William McMillan, who was found dead from a revolver bullet at Point Resolution, Auckland, last week, refuse to accept the theory of suicide, and allege that, the deceased was robbed and murdered. ’lt will be remembered that over £5 in money was found io McMillan’s pockets, but it has since been ascertained that be left the Thames four days before his death with over £2O aid a silver watch in bis pocket. He was known to possess a revolver, and the position io which the body was found on the narrow ledge of rock, with a revolver at some distance, contradicts the idea of suicide. Other suspicious facts ars in the possession of the police.
