Zealandia Skating Rinks.— The rinks at Geraldine tod Temuka continue to be well patronised, both sexes being well represented. The art of rinking is undoubtedly increasing in popular favor.

Cable Communication Restored.— The Nelson Evening Mail yesterday received the following telegram from Wakapaaks ; “ Repairing recorder spoke Fort Darwin on old cable last night. Cookt, Timabd.— At Hie Resident Magistrate’s Court, Timam, yesterday, John Russfll Morrison was committed fir trial at the next si ting of the Supreme Court, Timaru, for obtaining £5 from Frederick LeOren by means of faDe pretences. He obtained the money by teprejenlmg that he was in the employment of Mr Saunders, of Mackenzie Country, and that money was due t) him, whereas he ha I left, that, gentleman's employment some time before and had been paid up. Detective K'tby in his evidence deposed that accused admitted being identical with the John Morrison mentioned in the Police Gazette of 1865, and who got 2 years' imprisonment for attempted criminal assault; in 1868, 4 years for forgery and uttering ; in 1874, 5 years for forgery and uttering, four charges; amd in 1875, 5 years for forgery and uttering, four charges. A Useful Contbitanor.— Mr D. Henry, blacksmith, Temuka, has just completed to the order of Mr W. Fletcher, the contractor for the Woodbury wa‘ef race, a powerful earth hoe or spreader. Upon an ordinary awing plough a triangular steel share 15m. wide has been fixed. The ordinary mouli board has been removed, and in its place have been fixed two steel plates sft. long, fitted at their bases with flanges Bin. wide. These plates hare a swivel attachment, and can be set at any angle. They are stayed at any requisite width by a sliding cramp attached to the beam of the plough. The machine is intended to be utilized for scooping purposes, and will follow in the wake of a double furrow plough. It will b» drawn by either four or six horses, according to the nature of the ground. When no longer required for water-race purposes, the plates, etq,, can be removed, and the original portions of the plough readjusted. A trial of the contrivance will shortly be made. The manager's engagement having terminated he was reappointed for twelve months on the same terms, Messrs Aust : n and Gray were appointed a lub-ComuTtee to report upon repairs required at the Factory, and were authorised to invite tenders for same. The Secretary reported that seven tons of cheese had been consigned during the month to Australian ports. The desirability of postponing the date of the annual balance was discussed.
