At Auckland, Pine Awanui, who pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to defraud in connection with Native lands in the Tauranga district, w<"Bsentenced to nix months' hard labor, end to pay £250 fine and £lO costs, or to be imprisoned till the money be paid. David Asher, who whs on Thursday found guilty on a similar charge, was sentenced to nine month"' hard labor, and to puy a fine of £35 ood £25 (.oats, or to be imprisoned till the money be paid. The other six Natives charged with similar offences were discharged oo nolle prosequi. A daiing'nttempt at incendiarism was made *t Now Plymouth on Friday night, endangerng the large block of huildins>s in which the Criterion Hotel stands. On Friday night a hvibs of paper, oandle ends, etc-, was fouud in a box, alight under tho buildings, and extinguished. At Vlusterton on Friday, Willinra Waddle, charged on remand with being in possession of a portion of a distilling plant, was found "Guilty" by Mr Von Sturmer, R.M., and fined £75, or eix months' imprisonment. The money was deposited, and notice of appeal was given. At Kai*poi on Friday the jury at the inquest returned a verdict " that the infant child of Jane Norris was born alive and had a separate existence ; that death was c>msed by suffocation arising through want of proper assistance at time of birth, and oeglect on the part of the motljoi' in not obtaining that help." A « arrant was subsequently issued for her arrest.
When going inside the two breakwaters at New Plymouth on Saturday, flying light, b.i. Gerda was caught on the top of « heavy breaker and thrown against Messrs Huogerford and McKay's stagiog, crushing through eight log*, about a hundred feet in length, where she is now lying wedg«d fast, a total wreck. She carried away the donkey engine, and tho derrick, the monkey, and other appliances. No casualty occurred, all hands being able to walk ashore from the slip by the staging. Eighteen months ago the Gerda wus chartered by Mr Henry Guthrie, of Dunedin, for two years, six months being yet to run. TheGerd* was built in Flemsburg, Germany, where she was owned by a merchant named Schlutz, who it is understood has her fully insured in German offices.
On Friday morning the Port Chalmers Borough officials o'isted the Harbor Board staff from their offfce. The Corporation intend to build on the site occupied by the Harbor Board and gave the latter the order to quit some time ago but no notice was taken of it.
A very sudden death took placs at Blenheim on Friday evening. One Joseph Walton attended the Resident Magistrate's Court as a witness for his brother Jacob, a defendant in a suit for a horse and trap. While driving home to Onamatutu he became ill and was taken back to town. A doctor was sent for, but death occurred just as the doctor came in. The cause of death was heart disease. The sad off'ir caused quite a sensation.
