TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Temuka Town Board was held last evening. Present—Messrs K. F. Gray (Chairman), E. Brown, G. Mason, P. Coira, arid J. Blyth.MINUTES. The minutes of the last .meeting were read and confirmed. . PETITION. A petition from Messrs Franks, Edwards, Rayner,. Leach, and J. Angland, and Mrs Edwards was 1 read. It stated that the petitioners' considered
that the Main road opposite their respective properties not' receive the amount of attention as the roads in other parts of the town. Ever since the flood in November last the footpath had been unfit to walk upon, owing to its uneven condition and the stones washed up upon it from the road, and although, the residents had filled up many holes in the road there were still others in which filth and stagnant water accumulated. The petitioners therefore prayed that the Board would have the footpath repaired, the crown of the Main road near Mr Rayrier's house raised to an even grade, and the water channel along Mr Quinn's fejoce .cleared of rubbish.—After a discussion, in which the opinion was expressed| that the raising of the road would "be too expensive a work for the Board to undertake, it was proposed by Mr" Blyth, seconded by Mr Brown, and carried—" That the footpath and water-tables be cleared/on ' the east side, and the ditch on the'west side be opened." i j THE TOTALISATOEj ; A letter was read from the Christchurch City Council requesting the' Board to co-operate' ; with them in agitating for the abolition of the totalisator, and enclosing a petition i which they requested, the Board would get as largely signed as possible, praying for the suppression cf the machine. The letter condemned the totalisator iu the strongest terms.—Mr Blyth thought the totalisator was a curse to the country. Through it people often spent money that thry could not afford.-—Mr Coira]|did not know
whether it was a curse to the country, .' but it put money into the pockets of a few and took it out of those of the ■*•' many. It had been legalised when sweeps were abolished.—Mr Mason thought people would gamble, and, for Himself, he had no great objection to the totalisator. He thought the Government should impose a small tax on the money that passed through it. Though he was no lover of it he did not think it was as harmful as represented in the petition.—The Chairman considered everything stated in the petition was true.—Mr Brown considered the totalisator was a temptation to people.—The Chairman said it was a legalised gambling machine, and ought not to be encouraged.—The question was discussed at some length, .., after which Mr Blyth moved and Mr Brown seconded-" That the petition be taken round the town for signa- : tures, and forwarded to the member for the district." The motion was carried unanimously. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The Overseer's report was read. It was to the effect that one man had been employed for 19£ days, and one man with two-horse team for 7i days. The crown of the Btreets were cut up in several parts of the town, and he recommended that 500 yards of shingle should be got for Railway .Terrace,.Main Road, and Ewen Road. The rates were coming in slowly, only . JJ2 having been paid since last meeting. Tbebalahce in bank was £56 3s. mspicTOß or nuisances' Kir oar. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that the -nightman complained, that several of the pans in the town were •notfit for use. *'- : RATI DEFAULTERS. After some discussion Mr Mason moved—" That the names of ratedefaulters be placed in a hat, and 12 names drawn therefrom with the view of being immediately sued."—This was clone, and those ratepayers whose names were drawn will be sued at once.
