MR OLLIVIER’S PETITION.

Mr John Ollivier has forwarded a petition to Parliament praying for relief under certain circumstances therein set forth. He contends' that his office is a statutory one held during good behavior, or until resignation or death. The petition further points out that in the year 1878, without their knowledge or without any Parliamentary vote, Provincial Auditors were removed from the class under which their salaries were voted as permanent charges, and placed under departmental charges. Mr Ollivier points out that he has protested against this being done, and has urged upon the Government the desirableness of challenging the opinion of Parliament on this subject, and if adverse to him of relieving him from the public service by compensation for the loss of an office which he contends is one of life tenure during good behavior. The petition concludes as follows: “ Tour petitioner has sought for relief and can obtain none. He can obtain only vague promises of liberal treatment ; but your petitioner most humbly prays that he may not, after nearly twenty-four years “of faithful, of diligent, of anxious work in the discharge of the very responsible duties devolving upon him, be kept for a further indefinite period of time in doubt and anxiety as to his future position in the public service. Your petitioner therefore compelled to approach your Honorable House, and to appeal for protection and redress.”
