GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
10 THE EDITOR. Sir,— ln reading the report of the meeting of ratepayers held at Geraldine a few days’past, I noticed that Mr Postlethwaite said, “ They must bear in mind that Mr Shiers had to
—■■■■■■ , n nm . make put thp rolls} and do a great deal of which, outsiders Had no knowledge.” As a ratepayer, I would like to know whether-Mr Shiers has made out a roll 'since the year 1882, for since that date I understand the roll has been supplied by the . Property Tax Commissioner, for when the Overseer has ’ oen charged with assessing property too high he has always got out of it !.y paying that the roll was sent from Wellington, and therefore he was not to blame. Another ratepayer says t hat “ £4O or £SO has been repent m c Electing the rate when they had a • lerk ’ and overseer.” Pernaps the person making the assertion will state what year a single psnny was paid for collecting rates in thei Geraldine Soad District. . . . . Another- ratepayer states that, the salary paid to their overseer is put of all t o the, money expended, which is about £2OOO for,the year, and the expend!* 1 are is fully 12 per cent on that sum. I would be glad to learn how it occurs when we spent about £IO,OOO per annum, and the work was dona equally as well as it is done now for £2OO pel annum, where the Board bringing in any retrenchment as appears to be the order of the day at the present time in every line of business in New Zealand. Please anything further at the present time, but with your permission will send you A lino another day upon the same subjeet.— I am, etc., Batepatke.
[When we,tell our correspondent that the portion of his letter which we expunged contained - libellou* matter he will no doubt lee why we have not published it in fi^l., A nte* payer not long ago made certain accusations against Mr Shiers, and he made him apologise, else ;be would hare prosecuted. . That ratepayer be* lieved at the time that his:statements were true, but he f ound out they were erroneous, and he.apologised. Now is it not possible our correspondent is in error as regards certain matters he has referred to ? If so Mr Shiers could take an action against the pro* prietor of this paper.for ÜbfeJ, and he is just the man; would do it if he got the. chance. J 1 Itt thesehardtimes we do not see the fun of running such a risk. But apart, from that, we do not think it fair forr anyboe- to' attack any man in a public positioE signing his name in fullto hunter. ;■ .file annual meeting was held recently, but hot one man had anything to say against Mr. Shiers. No sooner is the annual meeting over than they want to make use of this; pappr to attack him anonymously; We are most willing to oblige our readers, and to give every facility for ventilating public grievances, blit we thinl the question of the Geraldine overseer has been discussed ■ enough now, and therefore must decline all further on the subject unless the writers sign the letters and pub* lish their names.r— The Editob.]
