FOOTBALL.

ENGLAND V. CANTERBURY. The match Canterbury v. England was decided nt Lancaster Park,- Chriatchurcb, on Saturday afternoon in magnificent weather, warm and Runny, with a fresh cool breeze blowing; from the north-east. The Englishmen won by four goals and two tries (14 points) to t yo goals (6 points), [n the first spell Canterbury made 6 points and the Englishmen nil. In the second - spell the Englishmen completely outlasted the Canterbury ,teim, who had not the condition; of their opponents, and played hard on the ball right through the spell, and although Canterbury ur«de some fine dashes at times they could not keep up Ihe pace. In the early part of the spelt they had very hard luck, on three occasions getting over the line,,but the tries ware disallowed. Between 5000 and 6000 spectators witnessed tbe game, and all good pieces of play were loudly applauded. WAIHI vTtEMUKA. * A match was played in the Domain at Winchester on Saturday last between a fifteen chosen from the Waihi Oltib and one from Temuka. The match had been arranged by the Rugby Union to take plica at Geraldine, but the lorauka Club eaid their men would not be able to go that distance, so the game was played as above. Both Clubs bad good fifteens m tbe field, and as the men stripped it waa seen that the Temuka men were the heaviest, and their opponents .were expected to be in for a signal beating; The latter, however, were in far better form than Temuka, and were determined to make a hard fight for the supremacy. The form and the form to!d in the play, the home team winning by six points (two goals) to ' nil. The visitora were also farced down several time, while tbe home team were forced down but once during the match. Tbe Waihi men certainly had tbe best of the game all through, the play being kept well within the visitors' ground almost the whole of the time. They, however, pluckily fought a up-hill sight, and were considerably weakened in the second spell by E. Smith being badly ' hurt and having to retire. Tffs Waihi

me a played a good game, but have still a great deal te learn. Again and again they worked the ball by sheer bard play on to their opponents' goal line, where, instead of beeling out in the scrimmages, ( they made the fatal mistake of driving it over, and the visitors forcing s££& the home team bad to retire the B«||il 25 yards. For the winners 6. Smith; Fitzgerald, Harte, Kalaugher, W. Stewart, Shallard (2), and H. Sennet played a capital game, while for the losera G. Velvin, Mendelsoh, Gray, Dyson, Hope, Gannion, and Anderson were the most conspicuous. Mr F. Barker acted as umpire for Waibi, and Mr H. Cliich for Temuka, Mr Flint acting as referee. I Quite a Urge number of spectators were I oo the ground, and the win was moat I popular. Mr G. Smith captained the jboiae team, and Mr G. Velrin the Te[rnuka men. This is the moat severe beitiug that Temuka has experienced for a long time pajt, and no doubt the members of the Club will now practice hard io the hope J»f wiping off trie score.

Waibi plays Tinjaru on Saturday next at Timaru, when no doubt a close game wilt be fought out. The followiug are the names of the team chosen to the Waihi Club:— Fullback Q. Smith (captain); thrue-r murter-hack*—(J. N. Macintosh, J. < A. Fitzffertilc', J. P. Kalautjlier; half-backsi-. T. Harte aad W. Stewert; forwards—E. Mabin, H. N. Hiskens, A, Stewart, F,-;
