Tim appeal of Mr Jasper Pyne, M.P. for Waterford, who was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment for inciting resistance to the Sheriff, was successful, an l the conviction has been quashed, Mr Wilfrid Blunt, who was defeated for the Deptford seat, will contest the Dublin election. ► April 25. In the House of Commons Mr Justin McCarthy, M.P. for Londonderry, tabl'd a motion condemning the increase of the sentences recently imposed by the Appeal Court on Irish subjects. Sir W. V. Harcourt, speaking on the question, said that tha machinery of the Appeal Court was simply an engine of brutal snd furious oppression, and it was useless for the Government to assume ignorance of what was taking place in connection with affairs in Ireland. Mr Balfour, Secretary for Ireland, denied that there had been an interference by the Executive Council with the administration. Mr Gladstone said the Government were responsible for the introduction of the ioul ami odions inequality and enforcement of law in Ireland, for which there was no precedent, and he asserted that the Appeal Courts bad been cruelly aud wantonly used against these in custody. The motion was negatived by 54, Bomb, April 24.
His Holiness the Pope has instructed Bishops in Ireland to order the clergy to abstain from taking part in any illegal meetings in that country, and also to avoid connection with any secret or political societies,
