Harcourt, speaking on the question, said that tha machinery of the Appeal Court was simply an engine of brutal snd furious oppression, and it was useless for the Government to assume ignorance of what was taking place in connection with affairs in Ireland. Mr Balfour, Secretary for Ireland, denied that there had been an interference by the Executive Council with the administration. Mr Gladstone said the Government were responsible for the introduction of the ioul ami odions inequality and enforcement of law in Ireland, for which there was no precedent, and he asserted that the Appeal Courts bad been cruelly aud wantonly used against these in custody. The motion was negatived by 54, Bomb, April 24.
