It is computed that the verdict of the Supreme Court awarding Bulger, a bookmaker, £25 damages for wrongful ejectment from ihe racecourse of the Amateur Turf Club, will result in a loss of £2500 per annum to the Club, as by the judgment they have no power to impose license-fees on bookmakers.

A fire at Yunnedah, 265 miles N.W. of Sydney, destroyed eight buildings, including the barracks of the Salvation Array.

Those engaged in the rescue work of iho Salvation Army give terrible and distressing accounts of the immorality prevalent in this city. During the last two years the Society have passed through their hands between two and three hundred females, whose ages ranged from twelve to twenty-five years. Some of the very worst class of children were those of tender years. The Society in their report express the opinion that the numerous dens in the city are the source of much vice.

Four navvies going down a shaft to a tunnel in Fortitude Valley (Brisbane) Railway, dropped a lighted candle which exploded twenty-five pounds of powder and some dynamite detonators lying at the bottom. A Chinese storekeeper here has been arrested on a charge of manslaughter. He had a fellow-countryman in his employ who became ill, and the storekeeper, to avoid the expense of obtaining medical assistance, took tho unfortunate man out into the bush, where he died after terrible suffering Irom hunger and thirst.
