INTERPROVINCIAL NEWS.
A fire occurred at Waipawa on Sunday morning, when the premises of Mr Smith, plumber, were destroyed. The origin and insurances are at present unknown, A successful camp of local volunteers has been held at Waipawa. A party attacked the camp on Saturday night, some with loaded weapons. Ooe of the cavalry received several shot wounds in the face, and others received small portions of lead about their persons. It is intended to hold an enquiry into the circumstances connected .with the destruction of the Wellington Opera House. It has been ascertained that the damage to the cable is about thirty miles from the \\ elliagton end. An eight roomed house near Ekelahuna was destroyed by fire on Good Friday. The house was occupied by Mr Burling and family’, and was insured for £3OO in the New Z aland Office. A new five roomed cottage at Petone was burnt on Saturday night. It was insured for £IOO in the South British. The origin in each case is unknown.
Mr Carmalt, Superintendent of the Dunedin Salvage Corps, died on Monday morning from a paralytic stroke. The dead body of a man, name unknown, was found early on Tuesday morning on the railway line near Epsom, Auckland, having evidently been run over by the cars as the skull wos fractured, his face disfigured, and one am broken. Deceased is said to have been seen the previous night the worse for drink in the locality. The bush tires relief committee met at Napier on Tuesday and discussed a report by the sab-committee. Captain Pioece, R.M., who reported on behalf of the Government, estimated the losses nrrih» insurances at about £BOOO, but th„ subcommittee believes that about £I6OO wdt meet the real necessities.
