WRECK OF THE PLEIONE.
Otaki, March 16.
The Pleione went ashore at Waikanae between Wellington and Foxton, at 2 a.m., and tbe Captain deoided to wait till daylight before attempting to land, and then suoooeded in getting ashore without any assistance from the shore. Three boats were lowered, and were placed in charge of the captain, first mate and second mate. Onnearine;thebsaoh the captain's boat capsized, and one of her oooupants, a seaman named George Belshaw, an elderly man, was drowned. Mrs Foster, a passenger, was taken from the water greatly exhausted, and the captain was also injured iu an attempt to gain tbe shore. Both are however, progressing favorably. The officers speak in high terms of tbe oonduot of the paiiangers. Till the haze of Kapiti was seen, whioh Captain Culbert took for Stephen Island, no land had been seen since leaving England. The ship was under fore, main, and mizzen topsails and jib when she struok, The body of the s ilor drowned has not yet been recovered. On the voyage, while in the Bay of Bisoay, a sailor named Haines was washed overboard and drowned. WEiLiHOTOy, Maroh 17. ??;The ship is in muoh the «ame position as yesterday. She h«s made a hole in the sand for herself. Little hope is entertained of the vessel getting off, but as she is not making water most of the oargo will be saved.
