Hawkins. The second annual gathering under the auspices of the above club took place in the Geraldine Domain on Saturday last, . and like that of the previous year was an undoubted success. On Thursday night the dry weather we have been experiencing lately gave place to a steady downpour of rain, which continued throughout the whole of Friday, and fears were entertained that the sports would have to be postponed. Towards evening, however, the weather cleared, and a slight frost succeeded the rain. Saturday morning broke as clear as could be wished, and the weather throughout the greater part of the day was delightful. A cold breeze sprang up in the afternoon, which made things rather unpleasant for standing. about. A very large numbsr of persons ' visited the ground, the takings at the gates being over £3O. A large proportion of those present were ladies. The Geraldine Brass Band, under the leadership of, Mr T. Sherratt, was on "the ground,/, their playing being much enjoyed. The arrangements made by the Committee/ were about as perfect as could .be expected, and were carried out without a hitch, the Jong programme of twenty-four events being got through by shortly after six p.m. The running track was in' Bplendid conditiou, and was highly praised by the competitors, the rain of the previous day having pat it into splendid going order. This no doubt contributed greatly to the fast time made in most of the races. The course was but nine yards short of a quarter of a mile. A straight of about ninety yards was roped off on either side. Ob the inner side of this again was the 100 yards straigLt, a beautiful piece of running (round. Mr Ja«. Riordan had the refreshment booth, and did a roaring trade. Constable Willoucftby was on the ground, but hie services fortunately were not needed. Mr W. Coltman filled the position of starter admirably. The success of the meeting was no doubt greatly contributed to by the assistance lent to the Committee by the gentlemen who acted as Stewards. The events ware in every case well contested, the finishes in some of the h&ndicaps being very close. Among the local competitors Messrs Kalaugher (Geraldine;, W. Angland (Temuka), and J. S. Rose (Woodbury), were about the most successful, while of the visitors A. Mc,3eath (Sheffield) was the greatest prize winner. The following are Ibe items:—
