HILTON PUBLIC SCHOOL.
The annual treat and distribution of prizes in connection with this school took place on Thursday iaat. The children gathered at the school shortly after eleven o'clock, very f«w of tlvi scholars being absent. The day being beautifully fine, quita a numher of tho parents and friends were also tempted out, so that the gather* ing was '» one. Games of every desciiption were heartily gone in for by the youngsters. The Committee were most energetic in getting up all sorts of pastimes, but a special word of praise \% due to the new muster, Mr D. W. M. fturn, for the manner in which ha worked to make the day enjoyable to both old and young. Under his supervisioo both b>ys and girls competed ia all sorts of games, the victors receiving prizes to the extent of some £2 ss. An exoellont to*, the edible < fot which were provided by Messrs J. Williams and Son, of Geraldino, was served in the school and heartily appreciated by all present. Everybody appeared to enjoy themselves thoroughly, and the treat was oho of the most successful held in connection with tbe school. Shortly before dusk the prises won during the year were distributed. The children having seated themselves on farms placed in a half circle outside, they were ad- | dressed by Mr Burn and Mr R. Skinner, ! Chairman of the School Committee, ■on the work done during tho year. Mr i Skinner particularly referred to the excellent results attained by the sewing class, which was under the supervision of Miss Bruce, and f )r which to prizes would be given that day. The przes, which were awarde.l to each child that passed the Inspector's examination, and consisted of books, reticules, and other articles were then presented as follows ; Standard Vll.—Constance Drake. Standard VI.—No pr«e was awarded, in this class, only one pupil, who failed, being examined. Standard V. Wifriam Earl, Edruond Beattie, William Hide, Ada Pawson, J hn Coughlan. Standard IV.—-John Skinner, Jeremiah Connolly, Elizabeth Beattie, Margaret Earl, Catherine Coughlan. Standard 111. —James Brien, Daniel Leary, Joseph Eail, Mary Coughlan, Ethel Hide, Isabella ftooke. In the preparatory class each child received a picture book as a prize. SEWING. Special ptizi presented by Mrs Hay. Clatß I.—Elizabeth Earl 1, Mary Leary 2. Class 11,— Maggie Earl 1, Mary Coughlan 2. Class lll,—Bridget Earl 1, Mary Constable 2. Class IV.-Mary Beattie 1, Catherine Earl 2. Special prize for patching presented by Miss Bruce—Elizabeth Earl.
Special prize for sew'nig presented by Miss Hay—Ellen Earl.
Social prize for presented by Misi Bruce—Norah Connolly. ' At the conclusion three cheers were girr n for the Committee and the Master and Mistress, The children were then reg» Isd with eatables, and afterwards disp /Bed. A lance was held afterwards, to which a g"; 1 number remained.
