At Napier the head of a gang of larrikins', who had been watched by the police for some limp, was sentenced by the Resident Magistrate to five months' imprisonment for using obscene language and destroying properly. Several other members of the gang weru dealt with more leniently. The Otago and Tuapeka police districts have been amalgamated, and Inspector Moore, who has been stationed at Jjawr rence, has been transferred to Invercargill, Inspector Buckley, who has been iu charge of the Southland district, retiring from the service.
At the Supreme Court, Oamaru, oa Wednesday, Jotin Cooney and James Scott were each sentenced to three years for burglary. John Cowley and James Finn were sentenced to three years each for an attempt to commit an abominable offence. Dr. J. Ronnie, who is connected with the Canadian lady doctor, was committed for trial at Uunedin on Wednesday for alleged indecent assault on a girl seventeen vears of age who was consulting him, It was contended for the defence that the charge was a trumped up-one. The dispute between a sergeant and the captain of the Invercargill Rifles as to the possession of the flobson Cup for one year which took the form of an action in the Resident Magistrate's Court by the sergeant for the recovery of the trophy, has been settled by a commission of officers Appointed by tho Resident Magistrate. They have found that Sergeant Nichol was the winner of the cup by seven points when the drill attendance marks were adjusted. Mr James Billing who sustained a compound fracture of the leg at Wellington on Monday night by tripping over a etone died in the hospital on Wednesday, erysipelas having set in.
