TEMUKA RIFLE VOLUNTEERS.

After parade on last Tuesday evening, the annual meeting of the members of the above corps was held, at which over thirty members were present. Captain Hayhurst occupied the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Captain Hayhurst said he had a little information to impart to them, and also had badges to give for the class-firing. The winners of the badges were : Corpl. Whitehead, rifle and three stars; Sergt. Hobbs, Corpl. Clinch, and Sergt. Guy, rifle and two stars each. Sergeant Guy had resigned, but the badges would be forwarded to him all the same. This year they had received £9l in capitation, and had £ll4 to their credit in the bank. He wished now to know what should be done with this. His own idea was that each man who had earned the capitation should get it, less 10s to be paid into the funds of the corps, and that those who could but did not secure the capitation should pay 10s out of their own pockets. Of course he had power to make them do it. He could summon them before the Court and make them, but he was not going to do that. Their yearly expenses would be about £SO, so he thought they could be able to get that easily out of the rent of the rifle range, the rent of the Hall, and the contributions of members from the capitation grant. The Secretary then read the balancesheet, which showed that the receipts

were £290 8« sd, the expenditure £175 15s 3d, leaving a balance of £ll4 13s 2d to credit. On the motion of Private Harte, seconded by Sergt. Hobbs, the balance ■ sheet was unanimously adopted. Private Harte also moved—“ That members be paid the amount of their capitation, less 10s contribution to the funds of the corps, and that those who had an opportunity of securing the capitation but had not done so pay 10s to the funds.”

The motion was carried unanimously.

A letter was read from the Secretary of the Jubilee Committee, asking the corps to refund the sum of 30s paid for the use of the Hall for public meetings re Jubilee, as the Committee was short of funds for erecting the obelisk in the park.— Corporal Heap moved that the application be not entertained, and it was duly seconded.—Oorporal Clinch moved, and Private Carr seconded, that the application of the Jubilee Committee be granted.—The amendment on being put,'was lost, and the original motion carried. The following Committee was then elected: Corpl. Whitehead, Col.Sergt. Coira, Sergt. Hobbs, Private Smallridge, and Corpl. Clinch. Lieut. Findlay was re-elected Treasurer, and Corpl. Mason Secretary. r J he Captain said they would have £4l to their credit after paying the capitation, and he thought it was time they made some improvements in the Hall. It was resolved on the motion of Corpl. Mason, to empower the Committee to spend £3O on improving the old Hall

In reply to Private Harte the Captain said that Colonel Bailey had spoken to him about going into camp this year, but the Government would only give them free railway pass, and tents. They would have to pay their own way, which would amount to about Is 6d per man per day. The North Canterbury corps had agreed upon going into camp near Christchurch, and it was Colonel Bailey’s desire that the South Canterbury corps should go into camp near Timaru. He would ask all who would agree to this to hold up their bands. Almost all the hands in the room were held up. Three new members were proposed. Votes of thanks were passed amidst great enthusiasm to the Captain, Secretary, Treasurer, and the outgoing Committee.

Captain Hayhurst acknowledged the compliment, and the meeting terminated.
