Mr McArdie’s house, at Pahiatua, near Woodville, was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The Chairman of the Standard Insurance Company at the annual meeting at Dunedin urged the desirableness of insurance officers co-operating to secure a fair and reasonable tariff, and to rescue the business from utter demoralisation, which the present cutting of prices inevitably leads to. The performance of “Le Cloches de Oorueville” in the Princess Theatre, Dunedin, in aid of McCutcheon’s family, realised £224. McCutcheon lost his life while attempting to save a girl from drowning near the St. Clair Baths lust Tbo Great Eastern Company, Mount Ida, have obtained 280ozs retorted gold from 100 tons of stone. Another caning case at Newton school has been reported to the Newton school committee, a boy named Gordon, 10 years o>d, having been beaten by the Rev, R. Coates, head master, and two weals were raised on his thigh. Mr Coats says the boy was punished for disobedience and repeated inattention. The railway station at Foxton was totally destroyed by fire on Thursday night, No cause is assigned for the fire, which broke out shortly after ten o’clock. One or two carriages standing near the building were also charred by the fire, but not destroyed. At the Dunedin Police Court on Friday a middle aged mau named Daniel was bound over to keep the peace for six months for. an assault on his father, the evidence showing he bad gone inte his father's bedroom while drunk, dragged him out of bed and threatened to murder him. A man named Claughton was gored by a bull on Friday on his farm near Inglewood. The bull lifted the man on his horns and carried him some distance, and on dropping him the animal gave him a dig with his boros in the side, breaking his ribs. Claughton, who is about fifty years of age, was taken to the hospital at New Plymouth. A sample of gold-bearing stone, found in the Kaipara district, and forwarded to Government for analysis, yielded at the rate of 4ozs lldwts to the ton. The gold is of fine quality. A child named Roderick Monro Goodman, 2 years old, soniof a man employed by Mr J. Deans, was drowned in the Avon on Saturday night near JKiccarton. It strayed from home, and was found dead in the river near the Riccartoc railway bridge. The funeral of John McCutcheon, who was drowned at St. Clair while trying to to save life, took place at Dunedin on Sunday, and was very largely attended. The City, Port Chalmers, and suburban fire brigade members were present. Cannon, who saved Miss Jeffrey after McCutcheon was drowned, was presented on Saturday night with a gold watch as a mark of appreciation of his services. A telegram from Gisborne says a second stratum of oil was struck on Thursday in the Minerva Well at a depth of 515 feet. A considerable quantity of sandy mud is being blown out of the well by the gas, which is coming in such quantities that it can bo burnt at the rnj.ith of a pipe. The presant rate of progress is over 100 feet per week.
