CONCERT AND DANCE AT WINCHESTER.

A concert and dance to celebrate the opening of the new school at Winchester was held in that building on Friday evening last. The attendance was very numerous, the large class-room in which the entertainment was held being crowded to excess—many having to stand. Mr A. W. Ensor, Chairman of the School Committee, occupied the chair. Miss Cox opened the proceedings with an overture on the pianoforte, which was loudly applauded. Miss Bennett followed with the well-known song “ Caller Herrin’,” which was nicely sung and well received. Mrs E. Barker came next with the ditty “ The Devoted Apple,” which was capitally given and loudly encored, the lady responding with “Love’s Old Song,” which also brought down the house. Mr W. Coltman, who followed, gave the song “ Steering Home ” in capital

style, and was deservedly encored, responding with “The Old Brigade,” to which he, as usual, did justice. Miss Ladbrooke gave the audience a treat in the song “ Only Dreaming,” singing it with much expression. Mr Cox gave the comic song “Three Little Piggies,” which caused great amusement, and was vociferously encored, and he responded with| another, “ The Twins.” Mrs Barker next rendered the beautiful song “ / Phe > Little: Hero ” with exquisite expression, and was loudly applauded. Mrß. Mabin’a song “Three Jolly Sailors ” in good voice. After an interval of about five minutes the Misses Gimpaori opened the second part of the concert with a pianoforte duet, which was very nicely given. Miss Ladbrooke’s song “ Castles in the Air ’’ was loudly encored, and in response she repeated the .. last verse. Mr Cox next gave the song “Nil Desperandum,” for which he was also loudly applauded. Mrs Barker rendered the story of “ Cinderella,” in verse, capitally. Miss Bennett was very successful with the; song “ The Golden Shore,” and was heartily encored, but did not respond. Mr Ooltman was deservedly'. applauded for his singing of “ The Gallants of England.” Mr Cox brought down the house with his Comic song “ Bohinson Crusoe,” and in response to an encore gave a song in which 0 capital imitation of the bagpipes waa brought in, which fairly; took the house by storm. The National Anthem closed the musical portion of the entertainment.. A much longer programme had been provided, but several of the performers were unavoidably absent. Votes of thanks to those who had assisted with the enter* tainment, and the accompanists, Missel Cox and Gimpaon, were carried by acclamation. A dance was held afterwards, to which -a very large number stayed. The music was supplied by Messrs Levens and Colville, and the dancing was kept up with great spirit till well into Saturday'morning. ;
