UNITED FIRE BRIGADES DEMONSTRATION.
CHRISTCHURCH, F»b. 21. Five thousand people attended the Fire Brigades demonstration on the old agricultural show gnunds to-day. The events began late, and were got off very slowly. Water was pumped to the hydrant from a sunken tank by a steam fire engine. The main burst during the first event. The following are details ; Hose and Htdrant, for teams of 5 men. Dunedin City, 55 3-sth sec ... ... 1 Port Chalmers, 71 sec ... .... ... 2 Only the two teams named finished. Manual Engine (dry); First prize, trophy (value £5 ss) and £3 cash ; second, silver hand engine (value £4 4s) and £1 10a Foreman Cow (Christchurch) 46 2-sth sec 1 Foreman Barry (Spit) 47 3-sth sec ... 2 Thirteen others competed, among them being Foreman T. Gunnion of Temuka, who finished in 63 4-sth sec.

A Kaffir on the South African diamond fields was suspected 'of being in possession of uncut diamonds,, and was pursued by officers of the law. When they had come up with him.be had just shot one of his oxen. They proceeded to search him. They ransacked his scanty clothing; they combed his woolly hair; thpy tried all the usual processes, but never a diamond did they find, and finally they had to retire discomfited. Then the Kaffir proceeded to pick out from the dead ox’s carcase all the diamonds with which his gun had been loaded, and which he had fired into the unfortunate beast whan he saw the officers approaching.
