TIMARU MARKETS
Little business is transpiring in the grain market. Quotations are: — Prime milling wheat, velvet and tuscan, 2s lOd to 3s Id; red chaff, 2s lOd to 3s; fowl wheat, Is 6d to 2s 6d. Oats—Danish, Is 2d to Is sd; Canadian, Is 6d to Is ,7£d. Barley (nominal), 8s 6d to 4s. Ryegrass, ,1s 6d to Is 9d.
AUCTIONEERS’ REPORT.
TIMARU. Mr Moss Jonas reports as follows : Very little alteration in the state of the markets is noticeable, and trade remains fairly brisk. Newmarket Saleyards—The yards were comfortably filled on the occasion of his sale on the 25th. Out of 12 entries of sheep 10 lots were sold, and of 62 head of cattle 51 found buyers. Considering the busy time it is with farmers the sale must be taken as a very good one. He sold 76 fat merino wethers at 4s 2d, 71 owes at Ss 3d, 131 crossbred ewes at 5s 2d, 175 4-tooth ew«S at 5s 4d, 65 2 and 4-tooth ewes and wethers at 6s 4d, 66 wethers at 6s Bd, and 6 lambs at 4s 6d. In cattle he sold 5 fat steers at £6,11 heifers at £2 2s 6d, and 9 at £1 15s, 1 cow at £2 17s 6d, and 1 at £1 9s, 8 dry stores at £2 ss, 6 steers at £1 10s, 6 at £2, and 1 at £2 7s 6d, 3 calves at 10s; also 5 pigs at 12s, and 3 at 20s.
Horses—At his sale at Saturday, the 21st, there was an entry of 20 draught mares, geldings, and light harness horses, of which he sold the greater part. He is pleased to say that horses are once more on the rise. He sold 2 horses, drays, and harness for £55, 3 mares and geldings up to £ls each; light horses from £7 to £l2.
Sheepskins, Etc.— He has effected a clearance of the various lines in his salerooms as under: —Crossbreds, Is 6d, 2s 6d, 3s, 3s 6d, 4s, 4s 6d, and ss; pelts, 2d, 3d, 4d, 6d, Bd, lOd, and Is; lambs, 9d, Is, and Is 3d, and a line of mixed skins at sd; 45 hides and calfskins at from to 4d; fat, 4s (id to 8s per cwt. Furniture —On account of a departing owner he held a very successful sale on Monday last, his large room being crowded, and every lot being briskly competed for.
English markets,
London, Jan. 26. At the Antwerp wool sales prices are firmly maintained. 'I he copper market is weak and prices are declining. Chilian is quoted at £74.
The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,360,000 quarters, and for the Continent 140,000 quarters. The arrivals of foreign flour are large, hut the market has not improved. For new Australian crop buyers are offering 33s ad.
The tallow market remains steady; 7000 casks have arrived.
Large quantities of Australian butter are selliag readily at 965, but the market shows a downward tendency.
