Bulk testa of 14cwt of Mnniototo ore (Auckland) have returned loz ]4dw* of goM, value £2 16s per ounce. In the Westport R.M. Court on Friday afternoon a man named Gardner, charged with shooting with intent to kill at Birch Hi’l Station, Malborougb, was remanded to Nelson. The Government have received a cable message from the Premier of New Souuh Wales to the effect that the extra supply of fifty Martini-Henry rifles required for the New Zealand Rifle Association cannot be spared. Timothy Booth, a young man who ha* acted as accountant, etc., was arrested at Riverton (Southland) on Friday on a charge of larceny as a bailee of a cheque, the property of the Otautau River Board, of which he was Clark. It is said that other charges of a similar nature will be preferred against him. A fire has broken out in the Puhipua forest to the north of Auckland, and the bush is reported to be in great danger. The Kahakaharoa bush, belonging to the Union Sash and Door Company, is also on fire, and a great destruction is certain unless rain falls or the wind changes.
A man named William Lewis was found dead in the Botanical Garden at Napier on Sunday morning. Evidently it is a case of suicide, as a revolver was clutched in the right hand, and deceased had a bullet in the right temple. Monetary troubles are supposed to be the cause. Lewis had been drinking for some time past.
The Solicitor-General has given his opinion that the payment of “thirds ’* can be made by the Government to special settlements on account of works they may have carried out, provided such associations appoint a secretary to receive the money for such purposes ; but ia future all works must be carried out by county councils or road boards.
Mr A. Toms, who has been town valuator at Oamaru for many years past, died suddenly on Friday morning. A postmortem examination revealed the fact that the cause of death was heart disease. The coroner’ajlury found that the fire at Gatlin’s River fKtel resulted from incendiarism.
A young naan named Aetley attempted suicide at Hawera ou Saturday morning. He was a passenger from Wanganui by train, and immediately on his arrival in Hawera was arrested on a charge of obtaining money under false pretences. On being arrested he asked permission of the police to visit the urinal. He was allowed to do so and at once shot himself in the left breast, evidently having aimed at the heart. The ball entered below the heart and travelled round to the back. It is not yet known whether bis life will be saved.
