The monthly meeting of the Sou tk Canterbury Board of Education vu held on Thursday, Present—Messrs S. W. Goldsmith (Chairman), W, B. Howell, B. H. Pearpoint, John Jackson, John Talbot, R. A. Barker, and M. Gray, and the Revs. T. J. Smyth and Geo, Barclay. It was also resolved on the motion of Mr Talbot, seconded by Mr Pearpoint—- “ That the Revs. Geo. Barclay sod T. J. Smyth, and Messrs Gray and daokson bo a committee to consider the "question of what retrenchment can be ;•effected in order to meet the reduced income of the Board, the Bev. Geo. Barclay to be con* vener; the committee to report to next meeting of the Board.” Inspector Gow reported that he had examined the Geraldine, Waituna Greek, Gapes’#, Valley, and Upper Otaio schools, and the Chairman read the percentages. —Reports to be forwarded on to the Com* mittees.

Mr West, the Board’s architect, re* ported that the work at the Winchester school was progressing favorably, and would be completed, well within contract timet ’

From this the Committee bad compiled an 11 urgent list,” the total sum for which was, £IBSO. Adding "contingencies, £600,” this brought the sum total they urgently required for building purposes up-to £2450. It was decided that both lists be sent to the Government.

After the reports had been read the Rev. Mr Barclay asked for an extension of time so that the Committee could complete their report, fix (he number of froholarfihips, the amounts, etc,—This was granted.

In Committee the Board considered the eases of Mr Taylor ’and Mr Dominick Brown. „ , , , An application from the Sutherlands Committee, that the pupil teacher might be retained, was refused. A letter from the same Committee, refusing to acknowledge any correspondence unless signed by the Chairman was treated with no notice, decisive action to be taken if any more trouble Other matters of no interest to this district were dealt with, and the meeting terminated.
